The Canadian luge team’s helmets, designed as part of a nationwide campaign to prevent serious head and brain injuries, are now up for sale via an online auction.

The auction is open to all bidders here until October 11.

All proceeds will be donated to the Creative Impact Health Foundation, a charitable organisation.

Seven members of Canada’s luge team, including two-time world bronze medallist Alex Gough, launched the "Put A Lid On It" initiative during the 2015-16 winter season in conjunction with the Helmets for Heroes charity.

Also taking part were Arianne Jones, Kim McRae, John Fennell, Mitchel Malyk and the doubles pairing of Tristan Walker and Justin Snith, who along with Gough and Samuel Edney finished fourth in the team relay event at the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympic Games.

All members teamed up with children who have overcome serious head and brain injuries to design helmets with the help of local artists.

The project resulted in seven different helmets, all of which carry a message and are unique to the athlete, designer and artist.

All members of the national team wore the headgear at every round of the Luge World Cup and during the International Luge Federation (FIL) World Championships.

Last month, Fennell confirmed his intention to switch allegiances to the United States.

The 21-year-old slider competed at Sochi 2014 for Canada, but was born in Denver in the US.

Representing his country of birth for the first time earlier this month, Fennell came second in the men's event at USA Luge's annual indoor start championships.
