Indonesian organisers were warned by the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) that they can afford no more delays with less than two years to go before the Games are due to begin.

A total of 39 full medal sports were proposed during a presentation given here at today's OCA Executive Committee meeting.

This includes the 28 permanent Olympic sports plus three of those added to the Tokyo 2020 programme last month, baseball and softball, karate and sport climbing.

Eight non-Olympic sports have also been planned, including bowling, cricket, kabaddi and martial arts - consisting of pencat silat, tanding, wushu, kurash, ju jitsu and sambo - sepak takraw. 

Squash, bridge and jet ski and paragliding, listed as mechanical sports, complete the programme. 

But skateboarding and surfing are not currently envisaged due to the lack of an appropriate venue.

There is no obvious surfing venue in either of the co-cities - and organisers are reluctant to utilise an alternative location such as Bali.

OCA director general Husain Al-Musallam claimed today that, while it would be good to use the event as a test event for Tokyo 2020, organisers are not under any obligation to add either sport.

A final decision will now is due to be made following discussions between the Organising Committee and the OCA Coordination Commission.

A total of 36 sports featured at the 2014 Asian Games in Incheon.

Soft tennis is the only one which appeared in South Korea and will not do so in Jakarta.

Bridge will make its debut at the Asian Games.

It will become the fourth mind sport to appear after chess appeared at Doha 2006 and go and xiangqi were added, along with chess again, at Guangzhou 2010.

Cricket was at one stage expected to be omitted before pressure for its addition from the OCA.

The programme was revealed as part of a detailed presentation today in which a range of criteria were outlined, including transport, accomodation and venue construction.

Concerns were raised thereafter, however, by OCA honorary life vice-president Wei Jizhong.

He highlighted two major concerns relating to cash flow and the speed of construction and infrastructure projects. 

"A lot of renovation is still needed and the timetable is already behind," he said.

"They have no room for any more delays.

"Any more will cause a big problem for the OCA, organisers and participating National Olympic Committees."

The 2018 Asian Games are due to take place from August 18 to September 2.

Hanoi was originally due to play host before withdrawing, citing economic pressures, in 2014.
