Basingstoke’s Down Grange Sports Complex will play host to the 2017 World Flying Disc Federation (WFDF) World Freestyle and Overall Championships, it has been announced.

The British town was chosen to stage the event, due to run from July 24 to 29, ahead of other "very strong bids" from the European, North American and Asian regions, according to the WFDF.

The competition will also mark a historic moment for the WFDF as it will be the first time that the World Freestyle Championships have been held separately from the overall discipline.

"The successful bid came from the Basingstoke Disc Golf Club which was selected from four very strong bids coming from the European, North American and Asian regions, and was viewed favourably on the overall experience it offered to participants and its proximity to central Europe which meant it would attract many specialty disc golf and freestyler players from the continent," WFDF President Robert Rauch said.

"Our overall events require athletes to demonstrate a variety of individual skills in a field events format, not dissimilar to concept of the decathlon.

"And we are excited to feature for the first time the Freestyle Championship - together with the Freestyle Players Association - on a standalone basis as well as within the overall format."

The event in Basingstoke, located in the county of Hampshire, will be the 13th edition of the WFDF Overall Championships.

Norrköping in Sweden staged last year's tournament.

Around 100 players are expected to take part across seven competitions - accuracy, freestyle, disc golf, discathon, distance, double disc court and self-caught flight - with world champions set to be crowned in each event.

Overall world titles will also be up for grabs for players who compete in three or more of the disciplines in a number of men’s and women’s categories, such as open, masters, grand masters, senior grand masters, legends and juniors.

"We are honoured and extremely proud to be hosting the WFDF 2017 World Freestyle and Overall Flying Disc Championships, here in Great Britain," event director and Organising Committee head Robb Hamilton said.

"We are super excited to have the very best disc athletes from around the world visit our shores, and we look forward to playing and competing with them.

"Holding the WFOC in my home town of Basingstoke is a dream come true for me."
