A cultural festival is set to be held alongside the 2016 Asian Beach Games in Danang, as organisers confirmed the Opening and Closing Ceremonies of the event in Vietnam would be broadcast live, alongside several of the sports on the programme.

Following an International Media Conference held in capital Hanoi today, Dang Viet Dung, deputy chairman of the Danang City People’s Committee, promised to deliver a "spectacular series of activities" outside of the sporting action at the Games, due to run from September 24 to October 3.

He hopes those whose events take place early on will stay in Danang to experience the city and what it has to offer.

“We want to offer the athletes a cultural festival when their competition is over,” he said.

“We hope everyone will have the time to be a tourist during their visit.

“Danang is famous for its long beaches and for its hospitality.

“It has a reputation as a peaceful and dynamic destination for tourists from Vietnam and overseas alike, and the people are ready to do their best to make the fifth Asian Beach Games a great success for Danang and for Vietnam.”

It has been revealed that Vietnam TV will screen both Ceremonies as well as live coverage of beach volleyball, beach soccer, beach handball and beach sepaktakraw.

Around 168 hours of the Games are likely to be shown on VTV6 and VTV8, while the company will also produce a five-minute daily highlights programme and 26 minutes of daily summary.

“With Vietnam Television as the host broadcaster, we are making favourable working conditions and offering full services for all media at the Main Press Centre (MPC) and International Broadcast Centre,” Organising Committee deputy chairman Vuong Bich Thang said.

Organisers have announced 377 members of the media have been accredited to cover the Games, made up of reporters, photographers, rights-holding broadcasters and host broadcaster staff.

Facilities will include a smaller media centre in all of the four venue clusters, with the MPC located a short 11 minute journey from the airport at the Truong Son Tung 5 Hotel.

A total of 14 sports are due to be contested, consisting of 22 disciplines and 172 medals events, at the Games.

In total, around 5,000 people are expected to take part, including team and technical officials, as well as athletes.

It will mark the fifth edition of the Asian Beach Games after Bali in Indonesia in 2008, Muscat in Oman in 2010, Haiyang in China in 2012 and Phuket in Thailand in 2014.
