Kristina Mladenovic, Caroline Garcia and Benoît Paire have all been suspended by the French Tennis Federation (FFT) for their behaviour at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

Mladenovic and Garcia were highly critical of the Federation following their first round defeat in the women’s doubles competition at the Games, with the duo losing 6-0, 0-6, 6-4 to Japan’s Misaki Doi and Eri Hozumi.

It proved to be a shock defeat as the French pair were seeded second for the tournament, but Mladenovic and Garcia blamed a mix-up over their clothing for their premature exit.

They claimed they had been faced with disqualification prior to their match, due to having been given different coloured outfits by the Federation, which is against the International Tennis Federation’s rules.

Mladenovic tweeted that she had been forced to give her doubles partner a spare outfit, but due to being sponsored by a different company, Garcia had to wear it back-to-front.

Following the defeat, Mladenovic alleged that the confusion had disrupted their preparations and blamed the Federation, stating: “Thanks to our Federation, so incompetent, to have ruined a sporting moment so important in the careers of Caroline Garcia and me."

The duo have now been hit by a suspension, along with Paire, who reportedly broke team rules by "staying away or coming back late" to the Athletes’ Village during the Games.

“Following the Rio Olympics, the Committee of the French Tennis Federation met at length about the case of the players and the player who violated the federal institution and damaged the image of tennis,” an FFT statement said.

“This is part of Kristina Mladenovic and Caroline Garcia who strongly criticised publicly the Federation after their defeat in the doubles in the first round, and secondly to Benoît Paire who has freed himself of the Olympic spirit.

“The Steering Committee considers that the unacceptable attitude of these players deserves an appropriate response and that it should be for each of them, established with care.”

Paire, the 16h seed in the men's singles, went out in the second round in Rio to Italian Fabio Fognini.

A final decision on what sanctions the players will face is due to be made at a meeting on September 24.

The trio are currently set to be suspended from French national team selections, as well as having all Federal support removed, but they will still be able to compete individually with the fourth Grand Slam of the season, the US Open, beginning in New York tomorrow.

The decision could have a massive impact on French hopes of winning the Fed Cup, however, with both Mladenovic and Garcia featuring in the country's successful quarter and semi-final ties this year.

The duo were the only French players to appear in their 3-2 semi-final win over The Netherlands, but their suspension could see them ruled out of the final against the Czech Republic, who have won four of the last five editions of the tournament.

The 2016 Fed Cup final will be hosted by France in Strasbourg, on November 12 and 13.
