British company Aggreko will be responsible for providing temporary power during the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games after they signed on as an Official Supporter of the event.

Aggreko, founded in 1962 and which has its headquarters in the Scottish city of Glasgow, have penned a “significant” sponsorship deal with Gold Coast 2018, according to the Organising Committee.

They have been placed into Tier Two of the Gold Coast 2018 sponsorship programme.

The contract includes powering the 18 competition venues, as well as the International Broadcast Centre, both the Opening and Closing Ceremonies, due to be held on April 4 and April 15 respectively, and the Commonwealth Games Village.

“The expertise and operational capabilities that the Aggreko team has in the area of temporary power delivery is critical given the absolute reliance on the system across so many Gold Coast 2018 venues and operations,” Gold Coast 2018 chairman Peter Beattie said.

“The temporary power systems supplied by Aggreko will also contribute to the Commonwealth Games sustainability planning by optimising the use of existing venue power supplies and providing all additional power requirements through temporary infrastructure.

“Aggreko joins an increasing number of Gold Coast 2018 sponsors and reinforces through their interest and commitment the level of confidence business has in aligning their brand with the Commonwealth Games.”

More than 100 engineers, project managers and global events specialists from Aggreko will work at the Games to design, manage, install and operate its generators and allied electrical distribution equipment.

The company has experience in performing the role at major sporting competitions, including the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games, Olympic Games and World Cups in cricket, rugby and football.

However, the firm withdrew from the tender process to provide generators at Rio 2016 in December, saying that contracts were being awarded separately and that they had been unsuccessful in the opening rounds.

They also cited time constraints ahead of the Games.

“We are very proud to be an Official Supporter of Gold Coast 2018, providing all the events with temporary power requirements,” said Aggreko chief executive Chris Weston.

“Our people on the ground in Australia, and the wider Aggreko team, look forward to working with the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games Corporation (GOLDOC) and helping them host a successful event.”

Aggreko are joined in the second tier of sponsorship for the event by KPMG, MinterEllison, Seek, Ticketek and Atos.

Jupiters Gold Coast, Griffith University and Tafe Queensland are located in the top tier as they are the three Official Partners.
