Kanat returned an adverse analytical finding for meldonium in a urine sample provided on February 17, 2016, after he had competed in the men’s up to 80kg class at the seventh IPC Powerlifting World Cup in Dubai.

The heart attack drug has been included on the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) prohibited list since January 1 but has been the subject of much controversy due to question marks on how long it stays in the body.

As a result of his violation, Kanat will now be ineligible from competition for two years from February 17, 2016, the date of his failed test.

All Kanat’s results obtained from the date of the test and onwards will be disqualified, including forfeiture of any medals, points, records and prizes.

This includes the bronze medal he won in Dubai,  which will now be presented to Great Britain’s Michael Yule who originally finished fourth.

The news follows the announcement that Brazilian thrower Luciano Dos Santos Pereira has been suspended for four years.

As a result, the visually impaired athlete will also no longer be able to compete at next month's Rio 2016 Paralympic Games in his home country.

Dos Santos Pereira returned an adverse analytical finding for two substances - stanozolol and oxandrolone - in a urine sample provided on May 18.

This was after he had competed in the men’s discus F11 at the IPC Athletics Grand Prix in Rio de Janeiro, an event that doubled up as the 2016 Caixa Loterias Athletics Open Championships. 

A string of athletes have failed for meldonium since January 1, with the most profile being Russia's tennis superstar Maria Sharapova who was banned for two years.

A number of others had their bans either lifted or temporarily put on hold due to the confusion over the substance.
