Canada’s women triumphed on the final day of the World Flying Disc Federation (WFDF) 2016 World Junior Under-20 Ultimate Championships in Wroclaw in Poland. 

It proved to be an all North American battle for the gold medal, the Canadians taking on their rivals the United States.

The Canadian team took a 10-7 lead in the contest, but a surge from the defending champions saw them level the tie at 10-all.

Competition at the Polemarsowe Fields in Wroclaw remained in the balance with the score moving onto 14-14, but Anne-Sophie De Baets claimed the final goal to give Canada a 15-14 triumph.

"It's amazing, we came with 25 people and everyone worked so hard for our success,” said Laura Kinoshita after captaining her team to the title.

“We really deserved it.”

Colombia defeated the Netherlands in the bronze medal contest and Ireland’s women’s team were award the spirit of the game award.

The US gained revenge in the men’s final after pulling away from their rivals following a tight start to the contest.

A strong display eventually saw the American team achieve a 15-11 victory to finish top of the podium places.

Britain won the bronze medal after beating Austria and Australian men picked up the spirit of the game award.

“It’s great to see the next generation coming up and the level of competition continuing to rise,” said Robert Rauch, the WFDF President.

“We’ve been hosting Juniors’ Championships since 1983 and this year represents the greatest number of participating countries ever.

"World Junior Ultimate Championships is being hosted at the same site that ultimate will be played at the World Games next summer from July 19 to 24, 2017 and is serving as a test event for the Games."
