Argentina’s football seven-a-side head coach Osvaldo Hernandez has named a squad of 14 players to compete at the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games.

“I want to thank all the players for their effort, including those that did not make the final cut but still gave their best until the final day,” he said.

On 10 September, Argentina will start their campaign against the Netherlands in Group B, followed by a match against the USA on 12 September.

Group B includes Ukraine, Brazil, Ireland and Great Britain.

Some of the names chosen by Hernandez are Gustavo Nahuelquin, Carlos Carrizo, Maximiliano Fernandez and Duncan Coronel.

Matias Fernández, Claudio Figuera, Matias Vera and Matias Salvat have also been called up.

The competition will take place at the Deodoro Stadium between September 8-16.

The top two teams from each group will advance to the semifinals on 14 September, with the medal matches set for 16 September.

Football 7-a-side has been a part of the Paralympic Games since 1984.

The sport, which is for those with cerebral palsy, is similar to football for able-bodied players with a few modifications.

There are seven players on the field at a time rather than 11, the measurements of the playing field are smaller, there is no offside rule and throw-ins may be made with just one hand.

Matches consist of two halves of 30 minutes each.

At the Paralympic Games, London 2012, 64 athletes competed in the sport.
