Britain’s Richard Whitehead has received the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Allianz Athlete of the Month honour for July following his world record performances in athletics.

Whitehead smashed his own world record for the second time in two weeks, winning the T42 200 metres in 23.03sec at the IPC Athletics Grand Prix Final at the London Stadium.

The reigning Paralympic and world champion received 45 per cent of the public vote.

Ukrainian wheelchair fencer Anton Datsko came in second with 34 per cent.

Datsko won gold in both the foil and sabre men’s category B events at the International Wheelchair and Amputee (IWAS) Wheelchair Fencing World Cup in Warsaw in Poland.

He knocked out home favourite and number one Adrian Castro in the early rounds on his way to the top of the podium.

Para triathlete Grace Norman of the United States was third.

Last month, after two years, the women’s PT4 triathlon class crowned a new world champion in Norman.

She won her event at the 2016 International Triathlon Union (ITU) Rotterdam Para Triathlon World Championships.

The American matched the pace of Britain’s Lauren Steadman in the swim, the defending champion's key strength, and Norman took advantage when her rival crashed in the bike segment.

British wheelchair tennis player Gordon Reid, who claimed his second career Grand Slam title in July after winning the inaugural men’s singles event at Wimbledon, came fourth.

The Scot defeated Sweden’s Stefan Olsson 6-1, 6-4 in the final and also won the doubles event with compatriot Alfie Hewett.

So far this year, winners of the IPC Athlete of the Month prize include Colombian swimmer Carlos Serrano, Russian wheelchair curler Andrey Smirnov and British wheelchair racer Shelby Watson.
