Niccolo Campriani went one better than his silver medal at London 2012 as he struck gold in the men's 10 metres air rifle event at the Olympic Shooting Centre today to continue Italy's excellent start to Rio 2016.

The 28-year-old from Florence, winner of the the 50m rifle three positions event at London 2012, topped the podium with a score of 206.1 points to finish ahead of Ukraine's Serhiy Kulish and Russia's Vladmir Maslennikov.

The Italians were denied a fourth gold medal at Rio 2016 in the men's trap later on day three as Croatia's Josip Glasnovic beat Giovanni Pellielo in a shoot-off after the pair had finished level following the regulation 15 shots.

The bronze medal went the way of Britain's Ed Ling, who overcame David Kostelecky of the Czech Republic.

Campriani came into the 10m air rifle event as one of the favourites for the title and did not disappoint, though he was pushed all the way by Kulish and Maslennikov.

He managed to round off the competition in style, shooting a 10.7 with his last pellet before Kulish could only managed 9.8.

The success for the Italian, who has had a book published on how to deal with failure since he was forced to settle for the silver medal in London, gave him the third Olympic medal of his career.

"For me, shooting in the finals is not about taking the best shot, but not making any big mistakes," Campriani said.

"Just today I was trying to keep as many happy thoughts as possible.

"Fear is always around the corner.

"At the end, it was really for me to find something positive and happy to hold on."

In the trap event, Glasnovic held his nerve in a tense shoot-off, hitting the target with his fourth shot before Pellielo's attempt was wayward.

"I did not check the scores because I do not want to know which part I am," the Croatian, making his second Olympic appearance, said.

"But I know I am the top because of yesterday’s wind, and today I tell myself I must shoot the best I can do."

"I just focus on the target, keep it simple."

The women's 25m pistol event is the only final due to be staged tomorrow.
