In recent years, the 36-year-old has cemented himself as one of the world’s strongest powerlifters in the men’s 59kg division.

Garrido won gold at the Santiago Para South American Games and finished fifth at the World Championships. 

Garrido later went on to claim the Parapan American title in the men’s up to 59kg, in Toronto, in 2015.

“I am extremely proud of having this opportunity to carry my country’s flag at the Paralympic Games,” he said.

“It is a huge honour. 

"Climbing onto the Paralympic podium in Rio would be the cherry on top of the cake.”

Other notable athletes representing Chile at the Paralympics alongside Garrido are Christian Valenzuela in athletics, Matias Pino Lorca in table tennis and fellow powerlifter Jorge Carinao.

Valenzuela won gold in the 5000m T11 at London 2012, Chile’s only medal at the Games, and the 33-year-old is widely expected to repeat that success at Rio 2016 after claiming the world title last year.

Powerlifter Carinao won silver at the IPC Powerlifting Americas Open Championships, and then went on to break the Americas record on his way to gold at Toronto 2015.

At only 19-years-old, Para South American silver medallist Pino Lorca has already won a Parapan American title. 

Whilst he studies to become a pharmacist, Chile’s most promising table tennis player is aiming for success at a Paralympic Games at the start of his career.
