American Robert Streb shot a record-equalling round at a major tournament to move into a joint lead with compatriot Jimmy Walker on a low-scoring day at the PGA Championship at Baltusrol in New Jersey.

Streb carded a blistering seven-under-par 63 to ensure he shared top spot on the standings with Walker on nine-under.

The performance from the 29-year-old, whose best finish in his career to date came at last year's PGA Championship, where he tied for 10th place, saw him miss out on setting a major record of an eight-under-par round.

Walker, the overnight leader, will perhaps be ruing his display on the 18th as he missed out on ending the day on 10-under-par by bogeying the hole.

World number one Jason Day of Australia managed eight birdies during an excellent round of 65 to move into joint third with Argentina's Emiliano Grillo on seven-under-par.

Henrik Stenson of Sweden, winner of The Open earlier this month, his maiden major crown, is a shot further adrift on six-under-par.

Both Day and Stenson look well placed to mount a series challenge for the title over the weekend.

Germany's Martin Kaymer and American duo Patrick Reed and Brooks Koepka will also fancy their chances as the trio are five-under, four strokes off the lead.

American veteran Phil Mickelson, a five-time major champion, narrowly survived as he finished round two on one-over-par, just a single shot above the projected cut line.

Northern Ireland's Rory McIlroy again struggled and missed the cut.

He ended on three-over-par to end his participation in New Jersey along with Dustin Johnson of the US, whose difficult two days out on the course saw him close on nine-over.

"I feel like I have been hitting a lot of greens and it was pretty stress free until about the 16th," Walker told Sky Sports.

"It's nice to see the putts go in as I had been struggling recently.

"I'm excited - it's going to be awesome and a lot of fun."
