An advert produced by Channel 4 for their coverage of this year's Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro has been heralded as the “best-ever” by the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) after it was officially unveiled last night.

The film by the British broadcaster, which features a series of British Paralympians running, swimming, jumping and dancing alongside a band of disabled musicians, has been the subject of glowing praise since it was first shown on YouTube and on social media platforms.

It is due to be screened on television sets across Britain for the first time later today.

The advert includes 120 people with disabilities, the most to ever feature in a television advertisement, it has been claimed.

The short film, which is just over three minutes in length, is entitled We’re the Superhumans, while Sammy Davis Jr’s Yes I Can track provides the backing music.

A number of high-profile Paralympians, including six-time gold medallist David Weir and two-time swimming champion Ellie Simmonds, feature in the advert.

IPC President Sir Philip Craven has hailed Channel 4, Britain's official Paralympic sports broadcaster after controversially being awarded the rights to London 2012 ahead of the BBC, for their effort, created by their in-house 4Creative team and directed by Blink Productions’ Dougal Wilson.

Sir Philip believes the advert, which comes off the back of Channel 4’s Meet the Superhumans campaign, is better than the film produced for London 2012 and is confident it will “shift perceptions” of people with disabilities on a “global scale”.

“When I was lucky enough to get a preview of the clip two weeks ago, I was left utterly speechless with intense goose bumps," he said.

"It was as if Channel 4’s marketing geniuses had spent one week inside my head, got all my thoughts, and decided to make them into a TV commercial.

“People with an impairment, no matter whether they are a Paralympian or not, can do some pretty great things and I think Channel 4’s latest creation captures the essence of this perfectly.

“It celebrates ability and I am confident it will shift perceptions on a global scale.”

Channel 4 have also revealed their team of broadcasters for their coverage of this year’s Paralympic Games, which get underway with the Opening Ceremony on September 7 and conclude on September 18.

The team will be led by Claire Balding and Adam Hills, who presents Channel 4’s The Last Leg show, while others due to be involved include former Olympic athlete Jonathan Edwards and Breaking Bad actor RJ Mitte.

Ade Apitan, winner of a Paralympic wheelchair basketball bronze medal at Athens 2004, and former cyclist Arthur Williams will both return having been a part of the presenting team at London 2012.

“It is a privilege to return to Channel 4 for the Paralympics and build on our Bafta award-winning legacy of the 2012 Games, which helped shift Para sport from the margins to the mainstream - and transform perceptions of disability,” Balding said.
