Vincent Luis claimed a home victory at the European Sprint Triathlon Championships in Châteauroux today after a British 1-2 in the women's event.

Both fields completed a 750 metres swim in the French town followed by a 20km bike and a 5km run.

Home star Luis emerged from the swim in the front group before completing the riding section in a sizable lead group.

He then produced a solid run to finish in 51min 59sec, just seven seconds clear of Azerbaijan Rostislav Pevtsov.

The Ukrainian-born Baku 2015 bronze medallist run two seconds quicker than Luis, but could not quite close the gap built-up after the swim.

Britain's Grand Sheldon claimed bronze a further 14 seconds back.

There was more British success in the women's event as London 2012 Olympian Lucy Hall earned a thrilling victory over team-mate Jessica Learmouth.

Both were locked together after the swim, before Hall took a one second lead into the run.

That gap remained the same at the end, as Hall hung on to win in 57:48 to Learmouth's 57:49.

France took another medal as Cassandre Beaugrand managed bronze in 58:32.
