Three-time French Open champion Gusatavo Kuerten has taken part in a wheelchair tennis festival in Paris, aimed at raising awareness of the sport ahead of the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games.

The Brazilian was joined by Andrew Parsons, President of the Brazilian Paralympic Committee and vice-president of the International Paralympic Committee (IPC), at the "Wheelchair Tennis for all" event.

Also in attendance were France’s Michael Jeremiasz, a Beijing 2008 wheelchair tennis gold medallist in the men's doubles, and French Paralympic Committee (FPC) President Emmanuelle Asmann.

Kuerten, who serves as an ambassador for the Brazilian Paralympic Committee (CPB), participated in the wheelchair tennis draws for this year’s Roland Garros.

"It is great to have a community who enjoys tennis and gets engaged with a wheelchair tennis event," said Parsons.

"This type of festival sends a nice message for everyone to play sports.

"It is really cool to be here at the invitation of the FPC and attend such a big party of adapted sports."

Kuerten was named a CPB ambassador in October of last year

Known as Guga in his native Brazil, Kuerten was officially presented as a CPB ambassador during the prize ceremony of the Professional Wheelchair Tennis Championship in Florianopolis.

The Championship forms part of Guga Kuerten Week and is the biggest wheelchair tennis tournament in Latin America.

Kuerten joined the CPB programme following football stars Romario and Ronaldinho, model and television hosts Fernanda Lima and Rodrigo Hilbert, Athens 2004 Olympic bronze medal-winning judoka Flavio Canto, businessman Luiz Severiano Ribeiro, and former Formula One drivers Emerson Fittipaldi and the late Ayrton Senna.
