Discovery Communications has added to its growing Olympic portfolio by signing deals with RTÉ Sport in Ireland and Croatian Radiotelevision (HRT) for Pyeongchang 2018 and Tokyo 2020, it was announced here today.

Under the agreement with RTÉ Sport, one of the leading sports broadcasters in Ireland, the company will sub-license the free-to-air rights from Discovery for its television channels, as well as its radio platform.

Eurosport will broadcast Pyeongchang 2018, the first-ever Winter Olympic Games to take place in South Korea, and Tokyo 2020 live on two channels.

The coverage of Pyeongchang 2018 will include the Opening and Closing Ceremonies on RTÉ 2, as well as daily highlights and on-demand content.

“The deal between Discovery and RTE delivers multichannel, multiplatform access to the best of the Olympic Games action, guaranteeing the widest possible audience for the world’s greatest sports event,” Susanna Dinnage, executive vice-president and managing director at Discovery Networks UK and Ireland, said.

“Our partnership with RTE is a win for every fan following team Ireland in Pyeongchang and Tokyo.

“Our objective is to engage and entertain local audiences with an exceptional Olympic Games experience, working with the finest national partners such as RTE.”

The multi-platform deal in Croatia will see Pyeongchang 2018 and Tokyo 2020 screened on both public broadcaster HRT, who also have digital rights to the content it broadcasts on its linear channel as part of their sub-licensing package, and Eurosport.

Eurosport, owned by Discovery, has rights to air all of the Olympic Games action on pay-tv and through its digital platforms.

“We have secured an innovative partnership in Croatia that will ensure that the Olympic Games remains accessible to the broadest possible audience and delivered to the highest standard for the viewer,” President of Discovery Networks Central & Eastern Europe, Middle East and Africa Kasia Kieli said.

“The agreement will contribute to Discovery’s goal of delivering more coverage of the Olympic Games across more screens than ever before.”

Eurosport chief executive Peter Hutton claims the deals show the company are “continuing to deliver on our promise to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to bring the Olympics to as many countries as possible”.

The agreements are the latest to be announced after Discovery signed a contract with the IOC last June, which will see Pan-European television sports network Eurosport become the continent's Olympic broadcaster.

Similar partnerships have been signed with BBC in the UK, NOS in The Netherlands, YLE in Finland and CTV in the Czech Republic.

Discovery has also revealed details of its Pyeongchang 2018 coverage in Norway and Sweden.

The Games in two years’ time will be shown on free-to-air channel Kanal 5, as well as Eurosport, in Sweden, while Norwegian fans can watch the event on Norge TV, in addition to Eurosport and Eurosport Norge.

Norway’s Lasse Kjus, a five-time Olympic medallist, including combined gold on home snow at Lillehammer 1994, has been named among the latest former sportspeople to join the talent pool for the coverage.

Discovery has announced it will become the exclusive National Hockey League rights holder in Russia and will screen the Six Nations rugby tournament in all Asian markets except Singapore.
