USA Luge is to keep its headquarters in Lake Placid, it has been announced.

The New York village, which hosted the Winter Olympics in 1932 and 1980, is a major winter sports hub in the United States and is home to the Mount Van Hoevenberg Olympic track.

The governing body had been considering, however, relocating to Park City in Utah, which hosted sliding sports at the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City.

Both venues regularly appear on the International Luge Federation (FIL) World Cup circuit with USA Luge now opting to remain in Lake Placid.

The decision has been made after bids from both locations and after a year of deliberations.

“After careful review and discussion on bids from Lake Placid, New York, and Park City, Utah, the Board have unanimously approved to keep their headquarters in Lake Placid for the next five years," said USA Luge chief executive Jim Leahy.

“Key existing factors like the Olympic Training Center, indoor refrigerated start facility and access to the United States Olympic Committee Sport Medicine facilities weighted heavily in favour of Lake Placid.

"The State of New York, through the Olympic Regional Development Authority (ORDA), has made a significant commitment to make capital improvements on behalf of USA Luge.

"In addition, New York Empire State Development will partner with USA Luge in a co-marketing initiative by providing funds to help support the performance of its mission.

“USA Luge will continue to have a robust presence in Park City for many years to come.”
