A British bobsleigher inspired by the film Cool Runnings has launched a crowd funding campaign to help him qualify for the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang.

Toby Olubi has also appeared on three television quiz shows to try to raise money to help fund his ambition.

The 28-year-old, a former sprinter, joined British Bobsleigh in June 2013 after responding to an open invite in the lead up to the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi.

The Londoner has given up his job as a supply teacher at a secondary school to pursue his dream, which he has compared to the successful efforts of the Jamaican bobsleigh team to compete at the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary.

“When I first started I felt like I was one of the characters in Cool Runnings," Olubi told The Daily Mirror.

"That’s all I knew about bobsleigh, from watching the film.

“But the more you do it the more it becomes real - it’s life imitating art.”

Olubi receives National Lottery funding from UK Sport but hopes the extra money will help him prepare better for Pyeongchang 2018.

“We don’t compete all year, but with the travel and number of commitments it’s hard to hold down even a part-time job," he said.

“So I did what I do best and researched every means I could of finding financial help. TV gameshows stuck out.”

In a show broadcast earlier this week, Olubi won £12,000 (£17,000/€15,000) on Deal or No Deal

He also banked £10,000 ($14,000/€12,500) on The Cube before losing it when he failed a task in the fourth round.

Olubi missed last season through injury but is now fit and confident that he will be rewarded at Pyeongchang 2018.

“We are rapidly becoming one of the best nations in the world," he said.

“In terms of athleticism we’re hands down the best.

“We have guys who have run close to Usain Bolt times doing bobsleigh.

"It’s only a matter of time before we start getting some real recognition.”

He is also raising funds through his Go Fund Me page which can be found here
