The Jordan Olympic Committee (JOC) has revealed that the online voting system for the 2015 Black Iris Sports Awards reached 1.1 million Facebook pages.

Facebook analytics are said to show that the five shortlists reached the news feeds of 1,108,040 accounts, following a flurry of liking, sharing and commenting which spawned 452,424 votes.

The figures break all previous records, providing the 21 nominated athletes with exposure and promoting their achievements to the public.

The Facebook voting takes up 50 per cent of the final marks to decide who will win the five top awards, while online voting, which attracted thousands of fans, makes up the remaining 50 per cent.

Asian Boxing Championships bronze medallist Hussein Ishish, taekwondo player Ahmad Abu Goush and jujitsu star Malik Al Hariri, winner of 12 medals in 2015, including seven golds, are three of the athletes up for the Best Sportsman award.

They will go up against kickboxer Udai Abu Hasswah and triathlete Lawrence Fanous, who is striving to earn a spot at Rio 2016, for the prize.

Table tennis player Sewar Abu Yaman, gold medallist at the Arab Women’s Cup, World Jujitsu Championships gold medallist Lama Qubbaj and badminton’s Lena Mazahreh have been nominated for the Best Sportswoman award.

Karateka Nabeel Al Shweiki, swimmer Khader Baqleh, who became the first Jordanian athlete to reach the Olympic qualification B time in the 200 metres freestyle, golfer Shergo Al Kurdi, chess player Ahmad Al Khateeb and Mohammad Al Goul, who competes in jujitsu, have been shortlisted for the Best Young Male Achiever prize.

The Best Young Female Achiever Award will be between World Taekwondo Cadet Championships silver medallist Aysha Al Sedah, fencer Balqees Al Qudah, a gold medallist at the Arab Championships, footballer Leen Al Btoush, badminton player Domo’ Amro and another taekwondo athlete, Taleen Al Humaidi.

The fifth and final category, the Best Paralympic Athlete, will be contested by table tennis duo Khitam Abu Awad and Fatin Elymat and powerlifter Mohammad Abu Arrar.

With voting now closed, the results are due to be announced at a Gala Dinner next month.
