The European Deaf Sport Organization (EDSO) has confirmed that three Winter events have been cancelled due to a lack of competitors.

The body's 11th Alpine Skiing European Championships and the second Snowboarding European Championships will not take place, and the ninth edition of the Cross-Country Skiing European Championships has also been called off.

All three events were due to take place between February 18 and 27 at a venue that hadn't been confirmed.

The competitions may now resume in 2018.

The news was confirmed to members of the EDSO Executive Board in a letter penned by the group's President Bjorn Roine.

He said: "European Alpine Skiing Championships 2016 is cancelled.

"European Snowboard Championships 2016 is also cancelled due to insufficient number of participants from the countries.

"EDSO hopes to have some countries who are willing to host the events in 2018."
