Singapore’s Chen Feng was a thorn in the side of the hosts on the final day of the Commonwealth Table Tennis Championships as he claimed the men’s singles crown at Pandit Dindayal Upadhyay Indoor Stadium in Surat.

Feng had been the only non-Indian player to reach the semi-finals of the tournament and his hopes of victory looked in the balance during his last four clash against Soumyajit Ghosh, with the match requiring a deciding game.

The Singaporean eventually came out on top in a closely fought contest, winning 11-9, 9-11, 8-11, 11-8, 11-9, 9-11, 11-9 to book his place in the gold medal match.

He faced the challenge of Anthony Amalraj, who had defeated Sanil Shetty 6-11, 11-9, 11-9, 11-3, 7-11, 11-7 in his semi-final.

Despite racing into a two game lead, a blip saw Feng’s advantage evaporate, but he was able to regain the momentum, defeating his Indian opponent 11-5, 11-5, 9-11, 6-11, 14-12, 11-7 and seal the title.

Indian hopes were also dashed in the women’s event as Singapore’s Zhou Yihan brushed aside the challenge of Mouma Das in the final.

Yihan claimed the opening two games 11-7, 11-5 to appear en-route to a straightforward victory, but Das raised her standard to reduce the deficit, winning the third 11-7.

However, it proved to be only a fleeting challenge of Yihan’s dominance, as the Singaporean quickly secured the remaining games 11-2, 11-3 to secure gold.

A third victory for Singapore over India, having also beaten them in the women’s team event, was sealed by Yihan and Lin Ye.

The duo earned women’s doubles gold, defeating Ankita Das and Manika Batra 11-6, 11-9, 11-9.

Although the home crowd had witnessed three disappointments on the final day of competition, they were guaranteed to witness success with both men’s doubles pairings in the gold medal match.

Ghosh and Harmeet Desai were able to see off the challenge of their compatriots Gnanasekaran Sathiyan and Devesh Karia, 5-11, 11-8, 10-12, 11-9, 11-3.
