Simon Schempp won the men's 12.5 kilometres pursuit at the International Biathlon Union (IBU) World Cup in Pokljuka today, while Laura Dahlmeier completed a superb day for Germany by finishing first in the women's 10km event.

Schempp, part of the Olympic silver medal winning German 4x7.5km relay team at Sochi 2014, continued his superb form to overcome France's Martin Fourcade in the Slovenian resort.

In excellent conditions in which there was virtually no wind at the shooting range, the 27-year-old swiftly accrued a 16 second lead on the rest of the field before Fourcade gradually began to close the gap.

The two were locked together by the final lap, working together to ensure the gap remained over the chasing pack, before the Frenchman suffered a decisive miss in the final shoot.

This enabled Schempp to win by 16.6 seconds in 30min 46.5sec, continuing his superb form after two successive sprinting World Cup victories, in Hochfilzen and earlier this week in Pokljuka.

"I was focused to shoot clean and I was happy to get a gap before the last loop," he said.

"Martin and I worked together during the competition, leaving others behind and securing the first two spots on the podium."

Russia's Anton Shipulin finished in third place, 23.4 seconds back, to complete a memorable week in which he has also become a father.

It was a day of German success, however, as Dahlmeier gained a fourth World Cup victory of her career in the women's race.

The 22-year-old won in 30:08.90 to finish 18 seconds ahead of arch-rival Marie Dorin-Herbert of France, winner of the 7.5km sprint event yesterday.

This represented a reversal from the result at March's World Championships in  Kontiolahti, Finland, where the Frenchwoman won gold and Dahlmeier silver in the 10km pursuit, as well as in the race yesterday.

A combination of swift skiing and flawless shooting powered the German to victory on this occasion.

Finland's Kaisa Mäkäräinen won the bronze medal, 55.2 seconds behind the winner.

Action is due to conclude in the Slovenian resort with male and female mass start races tomorrow.
