South Korea claimed a golden hat-trick on the penultimate day of competition at the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Shooting World Cup in Fort Benning, with Sungwon Jang and Su Wan Kim each claiming individual titles. 

Jang produced a superb finish in the men's 10m air pistol SH1 event, overhauling Ukrainian world record holder Oleksii Denysiuk in the sixth elimination round.

The 38-year-old South Korean finished on 194.9 points as Denysiuk could only manage 8.4 with his last shot to end up on 192.3.

Britain's Roy Carter finished in third place on 172.5 to claim a Rio 2016 quota place.

Jang's success also secured South Korea the team gold along with compatriots Chul Park and Seonghee Kim, with the trio finishing on a total of 1,697.

Eric Hollen, Mike Tagliapietra and Shaun Tichenor took US silver on 1,644 points, while the Turkish trio of Yunus Bahceci, Murat Oguz and Cevat Karagol took bronze on 1,638.

On the rifle range, meanwhile, Wan took a third gold on 446.3 having led throughout the 50m rifle three positions SH1 competition.

There was another Ukrainian silver medal as Iurii Stoiev finished in the runners-up spot on 445.9, while United Arab Emirates’ World Championship silver medallist Abdullah Sultan Alaryani took bronze on 435.4.

Elsewhere, Turkey’s Aysegul Pehlivanlar won the women’s 10m air pistol SH1, securing a Rio 2016 quota place in the process.

She had trailed team-mate Aysel Ozgun for most of the competition, before an 8.0 in the sixth elimination round cost Ozgun, and allowed her compatriot to capitalise for a single point victory.

Hungary’s Krisztina David also shot well before some late mistakes meant she had to settle for third place on 169.5.

Action is set to conclude at Fort Benning tomorrow with three gold medals up for grabs in the mixed 10m air rifle prone SH2, mixed 50m rifle prone SH1, and mixed 50m pistol SH1 categories.

Almost 180 athletes from 48 countries are competing, with the event the final opportunity for shooters to secure Rio 2016 quota places.
