Hosts South Africa secured the men and women’s double at the International Hockey Federation (FIH) African Championships after both teams triumphed on the final day of competition in Johannesburg.

The home nation's men’s team came out 4-2 winners in their showdown with Egypt, while the women’s side beat Ghana 3-0 to ensure top spot in the round-robin format.

Egypt opened the scoring in the men’s final thanks to Houssam Ghabran’s 36th minute strike, and although South Africa equalised 11 minutes later through Matthew Guise-Brown, their opponents promptly regained the lead courtesy of Ahmed Elnaggar.

South Africa levelled again almost instantly with Guise-Brown claiming his second of the game, before he went on to claim his hat-trick via a third penalty corner in the 59th minute.

Lloyd Norris-Jones then ensured the game and Championship title was South Africa’s, scoring the final goal of the match in the dying seconds to the delight of the home fans.

Earlier in the day, goals from Jade Mayne, Dirkie Chamberlain and Lilian du Plessis inside 31 minutes sealed a 3-0 victory for South Africa’s women on home soil.

Like their male counterparts, who won four pool matches, a semi-final and today’s final, the women’s team took the title having won all six of their games in the competition.

The African continental champions will be invited to participate at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games in accordance with the FIH Rio 2016 qualification system for the Olympic hockey events, approved by the International Olympic Committee.

The system states that after the completion of the last Continental Championship, FIH will communicate in writing the confirmation of qualification to the National Olympic Committee (NOC) and National Association of each qualified team within 14 days of the conclusion of the competition.

The NOCs will then have 14 days to confirm if they wish to use these quota places, with the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee being responsible for accepting or declining the invitation in this instance.

Elsewhere on the final day of action, Kenya beat Ghana 4-3 in the men’s third-place playoff, while Namibia thrashed Tanzania 10-0 to finish in seventh spot.

Namibia’s women also breezed past Tanzania, winning 11-0 to seal fourth spot, before sixth-placed Nigeria ended their campaign on a high with a 3-1 victory against Kenya.
