Rio 2016’s preparations for next summer’s Olympic Games have received a boost after the International Cycling Union (UCI) declared they were “extremely satisfied” with the recent mountain bike test event, which concluded yesterday.

The competition, staged at the X-Park on the Deodoro Olympic Park, came after a BMX test event - which was put back a day following complaints from riders about the safety of the course before being eventually cancelled due to heavy rain - was held on October 4.

Peter van den Abeele, head of off-road at the UCI, did, however, reveal the start section of the track would be re-examined, adding that any changes made before next year’s competition would only be “minor tweaks”.

He also claimed the course would be “way better” than the one used for the 2012 Olympic Games in London.

“The course was really well delivered and we only received positive comments,” he said.

“I was very involved in the London Games, which were excellent, and I thought it would be very difficult for upcoming organisers to do better.

“But after seeing this (the Rio course), it will be way better than London, so congratulations.”

Rio 2016 mountain bike manager Paul Davis, who also held the role at London 2012, said the course was “99 per cent there” and that they were happy with how the event had gone.

“It was amazing, the riders were super happy with everything we did, they loved the course,” he said.

“Now we’ll sit down with the UCI and address some small issues, but I think we’re 99 per cent there.

“We just need a few tweaks, but it’s truly special.”

Canoe slalom will be the next test event at the X-Park, with that competition due to run from November 26 to 29.
