Association of National Olympic Committees (ANOC) President Sheikh Ahmad Al-Fahad Al-Sabah and European Olympic Committees (EOC) President Patrick Hickey were both in attendance, along with members from around 20 different NOCs and NOCA head Gagik Tsarukyan.

Armenian Prime Minister Hovik Abrahamyan was also welcomed and Hickey awarded NOCA with an International Olympic Committee Trophy on behalf of President Thomas Bach.

During the two-day programme, a regional forum for the Commonwealth of Independent states, which brings together former members of the disbanded Soviet Union, was also held.

A commemorative stamp to mark the 25th anniversary of NOCA, formed in 1990, was unveiled and guests at the event were then treated to a sports show in Freedom Square, one of the main areas of the Armenian capital.

A gala night with the National Opera and Ballet Theatre then rounded off the two-day programme.

Before leaving the European country, Irishman Hickey and EOC secretary general Raffaele Pagnozzi were given the chance to visit the medieval monastery of Geghard, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, as well as Echmiadzin, which is considered the oldest cathedral in the world.

Armenia participated at the inaugural European Games in Baku in June after much deliberation following tension with host nation Azerbaijan over the Nagorno-Karabakh territory, a landlocked region in the South Caucasus.

They brought team of around 25 athletes who competed in eight sports and took home a silver medal thanks to Greco-Roman wrestler Migran Arutyunyan.
