Gwen Jorgensen is among those named on the Team USA Awards’ Best of September honours list, announced by the United States Olympic Committee (USOC), after claiming her second straight World Championship title with a convincing victory at last month's International Triathlon Union (ITU) World Triathlon Grand Final in Chicago.

The win completed an undefeated season for Jorgensen and extended her winning streak to an unprecedented 12 consecutive wins on the ITU World Triathlon Series circuit, dating back to May 2014.

Outdistancing the field by more than 29 seconds, she completed the course in 1 hour 55min 36sec to top the podium and the season rankings by 1,119 points.

Jorgensen subsequently became the first American woman to win back-to-back triathlon World Championship crowns and only the second woman from her country to win two career titles.

Also recognised for his achievements in September is wrestler Jordan Burroughs, who won his third World Championship title in the men’s 74 kilogram freestyle category.

The London 2012 champion won all six of his matches in Las Vegas, surrendering just five points to 45 scored on his way to becoming one of only three American wrestlers to win four combined world or Olympic gold medals, along with Bruce Baumgartner and John Smith.

The win improved his career record to 114-2 and saw him tie with Baumgartner and Lee Kemp for the most world titles in US history.

Joining Jorgensen and Burroughs on the honours list is the US men’s national indoor volleyball team, which won the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) World Cup for the first time in 30 years to earn a place at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

The team played 11 matches in 16 days, completing the tournament in Japan with a 10-1 record.

Leading them was Matt Anderson, who was named the competition’s most valuable player, after leading all World Cup players in serving, and US team-mates in scoring and kills.

In addition to Dow, the presenting sponsor, the Team USA Awards are supported by DICK’S Sporting Goods, Kellogg’s, Samsung and USG.

Each National Governing Body (NGB) nominates one female, one male and one team per discipline.

An internal nominating committee then selects five nominees from both the male and female categories, and three from the team category to advance to the voting round.

Votes received from NGB representatives and select members of the media account for 50 per cent of the final tally, with the other half determined by online fan voting via the Team USA Awards webpage, which can be accessed by clicking here
