Former Venezuelan Football Federation President Rafael Esquivel has become the latest figure embroiled in FIFA corruption allegations to have his extradition to the United States approved by judicial authorities in Switzerland.

Esquivel was among seven officials arrested in May shortly before the FIFA Congress in Zurich, with a total of 14 having been indicted on US corruption charges.

The official is accused of receiving bribes worth millions of dollars connected to the sale of marketing rights to five different Copa America tournaments in 2007, 2015, 2016, 2019 and 2023.

He was held in custody in Switzerland following his arrest, with his extradition approved by the Swiss Federal Office of Justice today.

He faces up to 20 years in prison if found guilty, it is thought, and now has 30 days to appeal the extradition decision.

This follows an announcement earlier this week that extradition proceedings against former FIFA vice-president Jack Warner had continued to the next stage after Trinidad and Tobago’s attorney general signed documents granting a green light for the process to continue.

More discussions are now set to take place on Friday (September 25).

Cayman Islands' Jeffrey Webb, who remained the FIFA vice-president when arrested in May and is arguably the highest profile figure involved, has agreed to be extradited from Switzerland.

Last week, the European nation approved the extradition of another former vice-president in Uruguay's Eugenio Figuereda, although like Warner, he is so far resisting this pressure.
