Singapore's Justin Liu and Denise Lim completed a dominant week in the Nacra 17 class by winning the medal race on the final day of the International Sailing Federation (ISAF) World Cup in Qingdao, with the result seeing them claim gold and a Rio 2016 Olympic berth.

The pair headed into the medal race with a 14 point lead and looked almost certain to step onto the top step of the podium, but they made sure by sealing their 10th win of the week.

China’s Zijin Wen and Rubei Yuan took the silver medal while Hong Kong’s Tat Choi Fung and Yu Ting Chan ended bronze, but they were both well adrift of the Singaporean duo, whose worst result of the regatta was a third place finish.

"It's amazing, there were so many challenges to make it here and to try and qualify the country," Liu said afterwards.

“To be able to do it is amazing.

“It'll be our first Olympics so there is so much to look forward to."

The 470 classes were also acting as an Asian qualifier for Rio 2016 and following a tough battle throughout the week Ai Kondo Yoshida and Miho Yoshioka sealed women's victory ahead of their compatriots Akiyo Yamaguchi and Eri Hatayama to secure the berth for Japan.

They had held a two point lead over China’s Xiaoli Wang and Lizhu Huang heading into the final race but a victory saw them seal the gold, while a second place for Yamaguchi and Hatayama ensured a one-two finish for Japan.

The men’s event saw China’s Hao Lan and Chao Wang reach the top of the podium after a fourth place finish saw them overhaul overnight leaders David Bargehr and David Mahr, after the Austrians could only manage eighth in the final race to end a point shy of gold.

More home success was secured in the RS:X events as Chunzuang Liu finished with a second place to give him a total of 46 points and an eight-point margin of victory over his team-mate Bing Ye, while Jiahui Wui held off the challenge of fellow home athlete Peina Chen to take the women’s title.

Elsewhere, China's Lei Gong overhauled his team-mate Luwen Shen’s five point lead by winning the final event in the men’s finn class to secure gold, while another home favourite also sealed gold as Dongshuang Zhang claimed her third straight win at the event after her Canadian rival Isabella Bertold struggled to eighth in the medal race.

There was also success for Britian’s Lorenzo Chiavarini after he delivered a professional display in the laser final to maintain his 17 point advantage over Croatia’s Tonci Stipanovic.
