Jordan Burroughs brought down the curtain on the Wrestling World Championships here by claiming the men’s freestyle 74 kilogram title and a fourth gold medal for the hosts United States.

The London 2012 Olympic gold medallist was comfortable against Mongolia’s Unurbat Purevjav throughout the final, registering a win by technical fall to secure his third world title.

Burroughs patiently chipped away at his unranked opponent using a variety of leg attacks before spinning behind with five seconds remaining for a 10-0 lead and the victory.

"This felt great; it was amazing," said Burroughs, last year's world bronze medallist, about winning the title on home soil.

He added: "It has been a difficult year fighting injuries and doubt, but there’s no secret that you just have to do what’s right and surround yourself with the best people."

In the weight category’s bronze medal matches, India’s Narsingh Pancham Yadav and Russia’s Aniuar Geduev triumphed at the expense of France’s Zelimkhan Khadjiev and Iran’s Alireza Mohammad Ghasemi respectively.

Earlier in the evening, Georgia’s Vladimer Khinchegashvili scored with a duck-under to the left inside the last 15 seconds of the men's freestyle 57kg showdown to take a 5-4 victory against former world champion Hassan Sabzali Rahimi of Iran.

"It feels so good to finally win one," said first-time world champion Khinchegashvili, referring to his silver medals at London 2012 and last year’s world meet in Tashkent.

Mongolia’s Bekhbayar Erdenebat beat Kazakhstan’s Artas Sanaa to the first bronze medal before which Russia’s Viktor Lebedev overcame North Korea’s Hak Jin Jong.

Lebedev’s compatriot Magomedrasul Muhtarovitch Gazimagomedov later took top honours in the men's freestyle 70kg class, defeating Iran’s Hassan Aliazam Yazdanicharati 10-3 to add a world crown to the European Games gold medal he won in June.

James Green won America's first medal of the evening with 70kg bronze at the expense of Bulgaria’s Miroslav Stefanov Kirov, while the weight category’s other third-place honour went to Turkey’s Yakup Gor, who saw off Belarus’ Azamat Nurykau.

Meanwhile in the 125kg category, defending champion Taha Akgul of Turkey made short work of Azerbaijan’s Jamaladdin Magomedov in the final with a technical fall victory just over a minute into the bout.

The Baku 2015 European Games gold medallist locked up a cross-ankle and worked it for a 10-0 win after 62 seconds.

Russia’s Bilyal Makhov became the first wrestler since 1973 to win both a Greco-Roman and freestyle medal at the same World Championships, outdoing Armenia’s Levan Berianidze in the second bronze medal encounter having come third in the Greco-Roman 130kg category on Tuesday (September 8).

This came after Georgia’s Geno Petriashvili had beaten Mongolia’s Chuluunbat Jargalsaikhan in the first bout.

Russia claimed the men’s freestyle team title with 61 points, finishing ahead of Iran on 48 and Georgia on 44.

The Championships concluded with the United World Wrestling flag being passed over to the organisers of the 2017 World Championships, which will be held in Paris.

Next year’s Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro will effectively act as the 2016 World Championships.
