Viktoria Gunes clinches double gold on action-packed fourth day at FINA World Junior Championships

Turkey’s Viktoria Gunes secured two gold medals at the International Swimming Federation (FINA) World Junior Championships on a day where junior world records were broken five times in Singapore.

Gunes, her country's first-ever gold medallist in the history of the event when she won the women’s 50 metres breaststroke crown on the opening day of the Championships, surged to a dominant victory in the 200m individual medley, clocking a world junior record of 2min 11.03sec to clinch her third title.

Canada’s Marie-Sophie Harvey was more than a second adrift in second, with Britain’s Georgia Coates coming through to take bronze.

The Turkish star had already won the 100m breaststroke race before her medley triumph as her time of 1:06.77 was exactly one second faster than nearest challenger Sophie Hansson of Sweden.

Katie Matts added bronze for Britain as she came third in 1:07.96.

“It was really hard, I wanted to beat the records and I was able to do it in the medley,” Gunes said.

“Though I need to improve a lot, especially in the backstroke but I have time to do it until Rio [2016] as I want to be part of the Olympic team.”

The United States took the men’s 4x200m relay honours, powering home in 7:13.76 to add a world junior record to their gold medal.

The team of Grant Shoults, Maxime Rooney, Sean Grieshop and Grant House finished a long way of the rest of the field as their time was four seconds quicker than silver medallists Australia, with Russia sealing bronze.

Elsewhere, the junior world record was broken three times in the girls' 50m backstroke.

New Zealand's Gabrielle Fa’Amausili was the first to break the mark with 28.09sec before Australian Minna Atherton went quicker in the next heat with 28.00.

Atherton then went faster still in her semi-final, setting a new best mark of 27.92 with the medals yet to be raced for.

American Michael Andrew was another swimmer in excellent form on an action-packed day at the OCBC Aquatic Centre as he won the men’s 50m backstroke in a Championship record 25.14.

His impressive performance saw him finish in front of Canada’s Javier Acevedo, while Mohamed Samy of Egypt and Venezuelan Robinson Molina shared the bronze as both recorded the same time of 25.54.

Andrew was denied a second gold medal in the 50m freestyle as Australian Kyle Chambers sprinted to a superb victory, clocking 22.19, forcing the American to settle for silver as Italy’s Giovanni Izzo took bronze.

Tamsin Cook maintained the Australian success as she smashed the Championship record in the women’s 400m freestyle, posting a time of 4:06.17 to claim gold ahead of 800m winner Sierra Schmidt of the US, while Italy’s Linda Caponi did enough to earn bronze.

Japan picked up their first gold medal of the Championships thanks to Rikako Ikee, who cruised to a commanding win in the women’s 50m butterfly in 26.28 to beat Canada’s Penny Oleksiak and Mariia Kameneva of Russia, who won silver and bronze respectively.

Anton Chupkov of Russia completed the 100m and 200m breaststroke double, clocking a Championship record 2:10.19 in the 200m race, touching the wall in front of Australian Matthew Wilson and Ippei Mayamoto of Japan.
