The Italian town of Pescara is preparing to welcome athletes from 24 countries for the inaugural edition of the Mediterranean Beach Games.

Having successfully staged the sixteenth edition of the Mediterranean Games in 2009, the town are hoping deliver another multi-sport event to a similarly high standard, with 11 events set to be on the Beach Games programme.

Aquathon, canoe ocean racing and finswimming are all set to provide spectators with exciting competition and they are joined by beach handball, rowing beach sprint, water skiing, beach soccer, beach tennis, beach volleyball, open water swimming and beach wrestling.

Competition is set to take place from August 28 to September 8, with 17 European nations due to compete, while the line-up on competing nations is completed by Algeria, Libya, Lebanon, Syria, Morocco, Egypt and Tunisia.

Pescara was announced as the hosts of the Games by the Mediterranean Games International Committee's Executive Committee in the Turkish city of Mersin, during their General Assembly in June 2013.

It came a year after they revealed their ambition to stage a Mediterranean Beach Games once every four years and the first edition have been organised by the Italian Olympic Committee in collaboration with the Municipality of Pescara and the Abruzzo Region.

In preparation for the Games the International Beach Volleyball Cup was held on August 14 and 15 August at the Stadio del Mare in Pescara, with the competition acting as a test event.

Organisers are confident the first edition will prove to be successful as well as showcasing the sporting potential of Pescara and culture through the event.

Additionally they hope the event will help countries to form a better knowledge and understanding of each other, while they also are inviting fans to follow the Games through their website here.
