Host nation the United States dominated the latest International Triathlon Union (ITU) World Para-triathlon Event of the season, claiming seven of the 10 gold medals on offer in Detroit.

American army veteran Melissa Stockwell powered to her first victory of the year in the women’s PT2, leading home a clean sweep for her country in 1 hour 19min 31sec.

Stockwell, second in the event at the recent Rio 2016 Paralympic Games test event, held on August 1, crossed the line nearly a minute ahead of compatriot Allysa Seely, with Sarah Reinersten coming through to take third.

The women’s PT5 classification also saw the Americans clinch all three medals as national champion Patricia Walsh clocked 1:08:55 to top the podium, with team mates Elizabeth Baker and Amy Dixon second and third respectively.

Kendall Gretsch claimed the women’s PT1 honours in 1:07:14, comfortably ahead of silver medallist Emily Tapp of Australia.

The American success continued when Andrea Walton took victory in the women’s PT3 event as she was the only competitor in the race, but will nevertheless be happy with her finishing time of 1:25:04.

The US men were also in good form as Andre Cilliers reigned supreme in the PT3 competition with his effort of 1:06:17, enough to oust Spain’s Joaquin Carrasco, with Brazilian Edson Dantas securing third.

Chris Hammer’s excellent performance gave him the men’s PT4 gold as his opponents were unable to live with his 56:58 time.

Britain’s George Peasgood clinched silver, just under 90 seconds adrift of the winning pace, while José Abraham Estrada Sierra of Mexico was third.

Britain claimed a haul of two gold medals as Ryan Taylor surged to victory in the men’s PT2, clocking 1:05:32 to edge team mate Andrew Lewis and Lionel Morales of Spain.

Compatriot Clare Cunningham proved too strong for the rest of the field in the PT4 classification, finishing in 1:06:07, condemning America to a rare defeat as Grace Norman was second, with Australia’s Kate Doughty earning bronze.

Brazil’s Fernando Aranha sealed the other gold medal available, beating Jose Vicente Arzo Diago in the men’s PT1 thanks to a time of 1:01:22.

Frenchman Alexandre Paviza ensured he claimed a podium place, pipping Australian Nic Beveridge to bronze.

The final World Para-triathlon Event of the season is due  place in Edmonton, Canada on September 5, where Paralympic Games qualification points will again be on offer in the PT1, PT2 and PT4 for men, and PT2, PT4 and PT5 for women.
