Weightlifting equipment supplier Eleiko Sports have been announced as a partner of the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) World Championships in Houston.

Under the partnership, the equipment used at the competition, due to take place from November 20 until 28, will carry the colours of the American flag for the first time in the history of the event.

All of the weights will incorporate an “Americana” theme with red, white and blue colouring as well as stars to represent the flag.

It will be first used when Team USA weightlifters host a training camp at Rice University in Houston two weeks prior to the start of the event at the George R. Brown Convention Center.

“When we first started talking about developing the equipment, we knew we wanted to focus on a red, white and blue colour scheme since this is the first time in nearly 40 years that the Championships have been in the USA,” Harris County - Houston Sports Authority chief executive Janis Burke said.

“Staying true to our Texas heritage was also very important to us, so we incorporated stars throughout our entire design; from the discs, to the racks, to the competition platform, you can see that the USA and Texas are well represented.”

The 87 branded sets of weights will also feature the World Championships logo, unveiled in February, for the nine-day competition, the first of its kind to be held in the United States for 40 years.

An estimated 900 competitors from more than 188 countries are expected to take part.

“USA Weightlifting is excited to partner with Harris County - Houston Sports Authority and Eleiko as we host the first Weightlifting World Championships on American soil in nearly 40 years," USA Weightlifting chief executive Michael Massik said.

“We take the honour of hosting these Championships very seriously and have worked to make these Championships the best ever for all athletes, fans and families, both in the venue and on the broadcast.

“We are confident that our equipment, our theme and our presentation will reflect the pride and honor that we have in hosting this prestigious event.”
