Kazakhstan’s Asian Games silver medallist Zhaina Shekerbekova began the ASBC Asian Boxing Confederation Women’s Continental Championships in confident style with a unanimous flyweight victory over Sri Lanka’s Dulani Arachchilage Jayasinghe in Wulanchabu, China.

Shekerbekova claimed a commanding win on all three judges’ scorecards to set up a meeting with China's three-times champion and Olympic silver medallist Ren Cancan in the last eight.

The 25-year-old, beaten by India’s Mary Kom at last year's Asian Games in Incheon, is set to pose a strong test to favourite Cancan after she recently beat current International Boxing Assoiation Women’s World Champion and compatriot Nazym Kyzaybay.

Elsewhere on the opening day, Mongolia's Nandintsetse Myagmardulam also breezed into the second round of the flyweight category thanks to a unanimous points win in her clash with Nasiba Ruzimatova of Uzbekistan.

She will now face South Korea’s Nam Eunjin in the quarter-finals.

North Korea's Ri Hyang Mi was the other boxer to earn a dominant victory in the flyweight division, cruising to a 3-0 win against Vietnam’s Anh le Thi Ngoc.

Japanese flyweight Ayako Minowa produced the shock of the day as she shaded a narrow contest with Pinki Rani of India, widely considered one of the favourites for the title, while Irish Magno of the Philippines also claimed a 2-1 win as she beat Taiwan’s Yu-Ting Ling.

In the light welterweight category, Shim Hee Jung of South Korea marked her intentions for the competition by beating Taiwan’s Kang Wei Ju, claiming victory on all of the judges’ scorecards.

The South Korean meets Linh Ha Thi in her next bout after the Vietnamese fighter was awarded a bye in the first round.

The other two light welterweight contests were much closer affairs.

First, Bayantsetseg Nyamjargal of Mongolia secured a split decision win over Uzbekistan’s Emine Shmikova.

The home crowd then had something to cheer as China’s Wenlu Yang edged India's Ramilal Pavitra as one judge was unable to decide between the two fighters, while the other two awarded the fight to Yang.

Competition is due to continue tomorrow with light flyweight, bantamweight, light welterweight and welterweight bouts.
