Cambodia remain one of the two nations i the region who have never hosted the Games, along with Timor Leste, but the NOCC held discussions regarding key areas which would need to be considered when putting forward a bid for 2023.

Among the areas debated were venues, public transportation, volunteers, ticketing and security, as well as the financial side of hosting the Games, with marketing and sponsorship and broadcasting also discussed.

NOCC chairman Thong Khon told the workshop that discussions over the bid would be held at the next meeting of the National Olympic Committee, before plans are submitted to Cambodia's Cabinet. 

Khon, Cambodia’s Minister for Tourism, presided over the workshop which also saw discussions over the preparations of their National Games, an event aimed at helping develop the country's athletes. 

Additionally the NOCC believe the Games, a biennial multi-sport event involving participants from the current 11 countries of Southeast Asia, first held in Bangkok in 1959, would help technical officials to learn how to organise major events,

The first edition of the National Games are due to be held from October 28 to November 6 at the National Olympic Stadium in Phnom Penh and Kampot.

The inaugural event is expected to cost an estimated KHR 4 billion ($1 million/£640,000/€910,000).

Prior to a potential Southeast Asian Games in Cambodia in 2023, Malaysia and The Philippines host the 2017 and 2019 editions of the multi-sport event respectively.

A host for the 2021 edition of the biannual event is yet to be decided.

Cambodia finished eighth in the medals table at the 2015 Southeast Asian Games in Singapore, winning one gold, five silver and nine bronze medals.
