America's Gwen Jorgensen won her 11th consecutive World Triathlon Series race in Hamburg today, stretching a run that started back at Yokohama in May 2014.

Jorgensen, though, was pushed hard in one-lap swim, six-lap bike, two-lap run sprint distance event by Britain's Vicky Holland, only shaking her rival off in the final 500 metres.

“A lot was going through my head at the end, Vicky really pushed me," said Jorgensen

"I could feel her right there on my shoulder, so I knew it was going to be a fight until the end."

Holland, who earned the only other World Triathlon Series title this season apart from Jorgensen in Cape Town, when the American was missing, displayed a phenomenal performance on the day to finish with the silver medal.

Holland's British team-mate Non Stanford pushed to join her on the podium, earning the bronze.

Among the large crowds, swelled by the 11,000 age groupers in the German city to compete, the women’s race started off with a no-wet suit 750 metres swim, which saw Jorgensen emerging from the water in the top five, setting  her up perfectly to join a 12 pack of women on the 40 kilometres bike ride.

By the time of the transition off the bike, the lead group had grown to 26, making it one of the most open races of the season.

Swift transitions from The Netherlands Rachel Klamer, Australia's Gillian Backhouse and Holland helped the trio blast out of T2, while Jorgensen trailed nine seconds after racking her bike to head out on the two-lap run.

It was a gap she quickly closed before moving ahead at the end of the opening leg of the 5km run pursued by Holland, who she finally shook off on the blue carpet to win in 57min 08sec.

Holland trailed just five seconds behind.

“I thought I had a chance of getting closer maybe to catching Gwen than anyone else has done yet this year," said Holland.

I felt like I was working hard to keep up with her a couple times and I managed to cover those relatively easy, but for the last 500 metres I knew I was at my limit.

"Waiting for that last kick because I knew it was coming, I tried to push one last time, but she just had too much for me on the day.”

In the men's race, Vincent Luis of France sprinted away from Spain's four-time world champion Javier Gomez with 300 metres remaining to win his first World Triathlon Series event.

Mario Mola of Spain finished third in an event missing Britain's Olympic champion Alistair Brownlee and his brother Jonathan, the 2012 world champion.

Luis, 26, is the first French athlete to win a World Triathlon Series event.

"It’s really good for me, but really it is good for the French,” Luis, who crossed the line in 51:54, said.

“I was really confident.

"I tried to attack him [Gomez], but then he attacked me.

"I had to wait until the sprint to set a fast tempo to make sure he wouldn’t attack me before the finish.”

Gomez's second-placed keeps him top of the overall rankings.

"On the run I did not have a great day, I just tried to hang on," said Gomez, winner of the World Triathlon Series in 2013 and 2014.

"I gave my best, tried a couple of times, but I wasn’t feeling great and I knew Vincent was really fast in the last 200 metres.

"I tried to go before at one kilometre to go, but he could keep up and then he smashed me in the end.

"But it’s alright, second place in the [World Triathlon] Series is alright, I did my best and still managed to get a good result.”
