The programme gives an opportunity for all different levels of non-profit groups to be involved commercially in the multi-sport event, which is set to be hosted by Papua New Guinea’s capital from July 4 to 18.

Applications from community groups were taken last year, with the programme set to involve well in excess of 1,000 people helping to clean venues, feed spectators and ensure all equipment is in place and fully functional. 

“While the Games Organising Committee has let millions of kina [Papua New Guinea’s currency] of contracts to local businesses, this programme is targeted to ensure that community groups can use the Games to generate much needed funds for churches, sporting clubs, youth groups, etc,” said Clint Flood, Port Moresby 2015 executive manager for operations.

“We are very proud to help in a small way to the fundraising efforts of these groups who do so much for this community.”

As many as 90 of the 144 community groups will be assigned to catering for spectators, while the remaining 54 will be responsible for cleaning and waste management.

The catering groups will be expected to adhere to strict conditions set by Port Moresby 2015, in line with the Department of Health’s health and safety standards.

They will be trained by globally-recognised caterers Eurest on how to handle food and prepare meals safe for public consumption at Games venues.

Cleaning and waste management groups will be trained by commercial cleaning companies to make sure all venues are ready for each competition day.

In the coming weeks, additional contracts will be awarded to community groups responsible for putting equipment in place ahead of the Games.

As many as 3,000 athletes from 21 nations are due to compete across 28 different sports at this year's Pacific Games.
