Port Moresby 2015 has announced that 10 Papua New Guinea provinces have signed up to the Community Celebration Site programme ahead of this year's Pacific Games.

Each community will offer residents the chance to watch live coverage of the event, which takes place from July 4 to 18, on giant screens, while art and cultural activities will be available at the sites during what will be the biggest sporting event in Papua New Guinea’s history.

The sites, located across the country, will each be themed with Pacific Games banners and balloons and a Tura mascot will be in attendance.

Extra entertainment at every Community Celebration Site will also be provided by the local provinces and they are set to be free of charge, alcohol-free zones.

“These sites will provide a vital link, connecting and engaging all Papua New Guineans with the Games by bringing the excitement of the events in Port Moresby to the provinces,” Port Moresby 2015 chief executive Peter Stewart said.

“We want every Papua New Guinean to be part of the Games in some way and a live celebration site in each province was the best way to achieve that.

"I want to thank these provincial centres for putting their hand up first to offer such a great experience to the many that cannot make it to Port Moresby to be part of the Games.”

The sites form part of a four-pronged proposal made by the Pacific Games marketing team to the Governors’ meeting back in October.

The proposal includes four province engagement schemes, namely live sites, Youth Leadership Programmes, a Provincial Cultural Group and the Oil Search Pacific Games Relay, aimed at ensuring everyone in Papua New Guinea has access to the event.

The 10 provinces that have signed up to the Community Celebration Site initiative have also pledged their allegiance to the Games Relay and the Youth Leadership programme.

The Pacific Games will see about 3,000 athletes from 21 nations compete across 28 different sports, with some offering athletes the chance to earn qualification for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.
