Chartier died on Monday (December 15) after his vehicle was hit by the parent of a student of the Mont La Salle College, where he opened a sports club more than 30 years ago, inside the school parking lot. 

Born in Gemmayzeh in 1937, Chartier was a member of the LOC Executive Board from 1996 to 1999 and National Olympic Committee (NOC) President from 2010 to 2013, and received the Merit Sport Award from the Government in 1999.

He excelled in volleyball, winning 11 titles as captain and coach of the national team between 1953 and 1969, while basketball in Lebanon was able to shine on the international scene when he was the federation's President from 1966 to 1999.

"Lebanon in particular, and Asia in general, has lost a great servant of sport and the Olympic Movement," said the President of the Olympic Council of Asia, Sheikh Ahmad Al Fahad Al-Sabah.

"Mr Chartier was involved in sport for many decades, as an athlete, coach, official, leader and mentor for generations, and we are devastated to learn of his passing in such tragic circumstances.

"The Olympic Sports Movement in Asia sends its sincere condolences to our friends and colleagues in the Lebanese Olympic Committee and also to the family of Mr Chartier at this terrible time.

"His work and his passion for sport over many years will never be forgotten, and will stand as a legacy to his achievements."

Jihad Salameh replaced Chartier as the President of the LOC last year.
