A total of 64 top athletes from 27 countries, including five male and three female Olympic gold medallists, are due to compete. 

Vital points towards qualification for Rio 2016 will be at stake at the two-day event, which brings down the curtain on the 2014 Grand Prix Series.

Four of the five male Olympic gold medallists  - Turkey's under 68 kilogram Servet Tazegul, Spain's under 58kg Joel González Bonilla, Argentina's under 80kg Sebastian Eduardo Crismanich and Italy's 80kg Carlo Molfetta - triumphed at London 2012, while South Korea's Dong-min Cha recorded his success at Beijing 2008 in the 80kg division.

All three females - China's under 49kg Wu Jingyu, Great Britain's under 57kg Jade Jones and Serbia's 67kg Milica Mandic - achieved the ultimate accolade at London 2012.

One of the most intriguing battles for a gold medal will be that between Jones and world number one Eva Calvo Gomez.

Jones has yet to win a Grand Prix title, having lost out to her Spanish counterpart in three previous finals.

They last met at the Manchester leg of the Grand Prix series in October, when 23-year-old Calvo Gomez produced a golden point finish, though her Welsh rival did come out on top in this season's Swiss Open final.

Despite those disappointments Jones, 21, is desperate to finish her physically demanding 2014 campaign with victory in the under 57kg competition on Thursday (December 4).

"It's been a hard year with many more competitions than we have done in the past," said the recently crowned Commonwealth champion.

"With one ring, it is going to be like a mini-Olympics and I am buzzing for it.

"Taekwondo is one of the top sports in Mexico so I am sure there will be big crowds, shouting and screaming.

"Luckily there aren't any Mexicans in my event so hopefully they can shout for me."

Mexico has previously hosted the 2013 World Taekwondo Championships in Puebla and the 2014 World Taekwondo Poomsae Championships in Aguascalientes.
