China and Hungary topped the medals table at the World Junior Open Water Swimming Championships in Balaton Lake ©Hungarian Swimming AssociationChinese and Hungarian athletes proved their strength at the World Junior Open Water Swimming Championships to see the nations each securing two gold medals at the event in Balatonfüred.

Hosts Hungary claimed their gold medals in the junior girls - 17-18 years old - 7.5 kilometres swim thanks to Nikoletta Kiss, who finished in 1 hour 32min 42.27sec ahead of Russian Anastasiia Azarova on 1:32:43.73 and fellow Hungarian Flora Sibalin with 1:32:46.53, and in the 3km junior team event.

Russia and Brazil took the silver and bronze medals in the junior team event respectively.

Meanwhile, China took home three medals of the six available in the 14-16 years old youth category.

Siyu Yan claimed victory in the girls 5km race in a time of 1:00:40.81 ahead of Italy's Carlotta de Mattia with 1:00:45.33 and Charline Secrestat of France with 1:00:45.71, while there was a bronze and silver for Jintong Yang and Zhongyi Qiao in the boys 5km with Taylor Abbott of the United States taking gold in a time of 56:13.32.

China also claimed the 3km youth team gold medal, with Italy and the US taking silver and bronze respectively.

Russia also took one gold medal at the competition thanks to a victory in the junior boys 7.5 km swim by Anton Evsikov with a time of 1:27:08.32.

Venezuela's Diego Vera took silver with a time of 1:27:11.21, while Russian Kirill Belyayev claimed bronze in 1:27:28.16.

"Many thanks for all involved in staging this event," Paolo Barelli, honorary secretary of the International Swimming Federation, said at the competition's Closing Ceremony.

"Hungary had 40 days to organise these World Championships but if anyone had two years to prepare for this, they couldn't have done a better job."

The next edition of the World Junior Open Water Swimming Championships are due take place in the Mexican city of Guadalajara in 2016.
