BREAKING: Samsung Electronics has extended its deal to be a worldwide TOP sponsor of the International Olympic Committee until the end of 2020. (scroll down to 15:30 for more and follow our story here.)

Good night

22:30 With that, and as the final few sports draw to a close, it is time for us to leave you for the evening as we recharge the batteries for another exciting day of action here in Nanjing.

If you haven't already seen last night's Opening Ceremony, or want to catch the best bits all over again, then why not head to our picture gallery to see all the best images from a spectacular evening of entertainment.

Before that, here are a few of our favourite images to round up an incredible first day of the Nanjing 2014 Summer Youth Olympic Games....

22:09
Since Dutton's gold we've had a wealth of action to sink our teeth into here in Nanjing with double delight for the hosts in the weightlifting, as well as superb run in the rugby sevens, which is making its debut at the Youth Olympic Games.

There's also been family fortunes running in the American team as Sabrina Massialas tastes gold under the watchful eye of father, coach and three-time Olympian Greg Massialas, while the judo has supplied a wide-array of medal-winning nations.

If that wasn't enough to whet your appetite, then Olympic history in the pool may have been more to your liking.

Here, Marcelo Alberto Acosta won a first ever Olympic medal, from any form of the Games, for El Salvador with silver in the men's 400m freestyle event.

22:00 As day one of the 2nd Summer Youth Olympic Games drifts softly to a close I think it's time to look back on how it all began.

Opening the day's, and the Games' action was the women's triathlon where Brittany Dutton swam, cycled and jogged to victory for Australia.

Since that time the young Aussie has become somewhat of a twitter celebrity following a #Yogselfie with none other than IOC President Thomas Bach.

Here's what she has had to say following a momentous day of sporting action here in Nanjing.

Twitter logoMassive thanks to @J0SH_WHITE @Aussiemossy @Fiziologist for helping me make my dreams come true! Couldn't have done it without you guys!

Twitter logoI would also like to thank my training partners @Soph_malowiecki @ejjacko without you guys I wouldn't have a great atmosphere!

Selfie craze continues...

21:20 We've already had flods of #YOGselfies at these Games. Here's one of gold medal winning fencer Sabrina Massialas with coach and father Greg.

First gold medal for Iran

Nanjing 2014 gold medal21:00 Gold for Iran in the men's under 48kg taekwondo competition.

Mahdi Eshaghi is the one to seal it as he defeats Chines Taipei's Chen-Yu Wang. The world junior champion proved too strong for Wang, also a world junior champion, as he secured the gold with a final score of 17-7.

The two bronze medals were won by Germany's Daniel Chiovetta and France's Stephane Audibert.

20:40 That clean and jerk lift of 155kg by China's Cheng Meng was a youth world record.

It also lifts China well clear at the top of the medals table as they seal three golds on the opening day of action here in Nanjing.

Nanjing 2014 gold medal20:32 They think it's all over... It is now!

In the weightlifting that is anyway as China's Cheng Meng takes gold in the men's 56kg event.

His dominant performance in the snatch was only enhanced in the clean and jerk as he lifted 155kg for a total of 283kg.

That was a massive 40kg more than second and third places Tuan Nguyen Tran Anh of Vietnam and Uzbekistan's Adkhamjon Ergashev. The pair both lifted 243kg, however, it is the man from Vietnam who will take home the silver due to his slightly lower bodyweight.

It looks like that McDonald's breakfast could have cost you silver Ergashev....

Nanjing 2014 gold medal
20:29 Gold for Thailand's Panipak Wongpattanankit in the women's under 44kg taekwondo contest.

The Thai fighter has looked dominant in this contest from her very first bout and made easy work of Azerbaijan's Ceren Ozbek in the final. The final score was 21-1 after two rounds with Wongpattanankit winning by points gap.

The two bronze medals went to Taiwan's Zih-Ting Chen and, as we told you earlier, Great Britain's Abigail Stones.

A good action shot of Ivan Ilin of Russian en route to sabre fencing gold earlier on. Action on the piste has long finished in the Expo Centre, however, and it is all about taekwondo and weightlifting now. Will we have more Chinese gold to celebrate?

20:15 A great victory for the Kazakh fighter there, and it is great to see Central Asian and Eastern European nations excelling on the opening day of judo action, along with the Japanese, of course.

Ten different countries have already won gold medals after 11 events on Day One. There are three more to come, and all of them will be won at the International Expo Centre, where my colleague Paul Osborne is perched, desperately hoping his battery will last.

It's all very well copiously buying travel adapters that work in China, but when there is no power available in the media stands, you have a problem after a while. Particularly when you cover three sports, back to back as Paul has done...

Nanjing 2014 gold medal
19:58 Bauyrzhan Zhauyntayev of Kazakhstan has taken the final gold medal of the evening in judo. He defeats Azerbaijan's Natig Gurbanli in the under 51kg category. That is a second successive silver for the host nation of the 2015 European Games.

Oguzhan Karaca of Turkey continues a great night for his country with bronze, while the other is taken by Jorre Verstraeten of Belgium.

Paul Osborne"I feel I may be getting a number of bemused looks at the International Expo as I dash from sport to sport in search of medals. I've made it to Hall D now where the taekwondo semi-finals are underway. Both women's under 44kg contests are out of the way with Thailand's Panipak Wongpattanakit and Azerbaijan's Ceren Ozbek moving through to the final at the expense of Chinese Taipei's Zih-Ting Chen and Great Britain's Abigail Stones. Next up we have the two men's under 48kg semis before the two finals just after 20:00. Stones was hoping to to replicate the success of Jade Jones who took gold in Singapore before moving on to Olympic success at London 2012. She'll have to settle with the bronze. however."
- Paul Osborne on sport-hopping and taekwondo.

19:36 We will try and find out what the reception was like for Abe - who is no relation of his namesake the Japanese Prime Minister, Shinzo - following the boos that greeted the Japanese team at the Opening Ceremony. But a great first gold medal of the Games for the traditional judo powerhouse.

It puts Japan joint second on the medals table, with Russia and the US, behind China.

Nanjing 2014 gold medal
19:32 Hifumi Abe strikes a waza-ari to win Japanese gold in the men's under 66kg competition. He beats Bogdan Iadov of Ukraine in the final, so that was nearly a second gold of the evening for Ukraine.

Bronze medals go to Sukhrob Tursunov of Uzbekistan and Wu Zhiqiang of China.

China become first nation to win two gold medals at Nanjing 2014

Nanjing 2014 gold medal
19:20 China win the gold medal in the mixed 4x100m freestyle relay swimming. They stop the clock at 3:27:02 to win by four-and-a-half seconds to win from Brazil and Australia. That is a stunning performance from the quartet, consisting of two boys and two girls.

Li Zhuhao, Qiu Yuhan, Shen Duo and Yu Hexin was the team, and their margin of victory is all the more amazing considering they were not even in the lead until the third leg of four.

Paul Osborne"After a quick dash around the corner I've made my way to Hall F where the men's 56kg weightlifting final is taking place. The noise levels are much improved in here as the crowd eagerly await another Chinese gold medal. Cheng Meng looks well on his way to delivering as he successfully lifts 120kg. Meng's first lift came after all other competitors had finished their attempts with the man from China already 12kg ahead of his closest rival. He's looking incredible comfortable in this one as he attempts 128kg. Chinese gold looks inevitable here. Should be a tight contest for silver and bronze, however."
- Not that I disagree with Paul Osborne's prediction, but I hope he hasn't forgotten the old weightlifting adage: "Snatch is for show, but clean and jerk is for dough"...

Gold for Turkey in judo

Nanjing 2014 gold medal
19:12 The gold medals are coming thick and fast, and Melisa Cakmakli of Turkey has just taken the first one in judo in the girl's under 44kg division. She defeated Leyla Aliyeva in the final.

Honoka Yamauchi of Japan and Anastasya Turcheva of Russia secured the two bronze medals.

Swimming gold for Vietnam's "Little Mermaid"

19:04 Nguyen Thi Anh Vien may be not from an established swimming powerhouse, but she already has a huge reputation, and was voted Vietnam's top athlete in 2013, after winning 50 international medals, including 26 titles.

In the 2013 SEA Games in Nay Pyi Taw in Myanmar, she won three gold, two silver and one bronze medals and set two new event records, becoming the first ever Vietnamese swimmer to win at the SEA Games since its debut in 1959.

Known as the "Little Mermaid", she won one title at the Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games and three others at the Asian Youth Games here in Nanjing.

18:57 Vien Nguyen Thi Anh wins gold for Vietnam in the girl's 200m individual medley swimming. She stops the clock at 2:12:66 to beat Hong Kong's Siobhan Bernadette Haughey into second.

Meghan Small of the US takes bronze.

First gold of Nanjing 2014 for United States, and then Russia, in fencing

Nanjing 2014 gold medal
18:54 It's gold for Russia's Ivan Ilin in the men's individual sabre! The Russian was too strong for South Korea's Dongju Kim as he stormed to a 15-7 victory.

Bronze went to China's Yinghui Yan after he defeated Tunisia's Fares Ferjani in the earlier bronze medal encounter.

18:46 A quick round-up before we return to the medals. Argentina have beaten Japan 40-12 in the final rugby sevens match of the day. In this evening's two other clashes in the boy's event, Fiji have beaten the US 29-10 and France were 24-0 winners over Kenya.

New Zealand have beaten Zambia 8-2 in hockey5s after Spain blew away Bangladesh 9-1 in the first boys match.

18:40 With their triathlon silver earlier, the US are the early pacesetters on our medals table, ahead of China.

Paul Osborne"Incidentally, Greg Massialas, Sabrina's coach and father is a three-time Olympian himself, having competed in the men's individual foil events at the 1984 and 1988 Olympics, as well as the men's team event at the 1984 Games. Greg's son, and Sabrina's sister, is also somewhat of a fencing star having won silver in Singapore in the inaugural Youth Olympic Games before competing for the US at London 2012. Quite a family the Massialas have there..."
- Reporter Paul Osborne at the fencing.

Nanjing 2014 gold medal
18:34 Gold for Sabrina Massialas of the United States in the women's individual foil! The two-time Cadet World Championships silver medallist has gone all the way at the International Expo Centre in a truly dramatic final.

Leading 5-2 coming into the final round, Massialas looked well on her way to gold. Japan's Karin Miyawaki came fighting back, however, and soared into a 6-5 lead. A last gasp point saw the US fencer send it to sudden death where she scored the crucial point to secure the gold. The win was met with scream of joy by Massialas herself, and her coach/father Greg.

Bronze was won by China's Ali Huang earlier on.

Paul Osborne"Slightly disappointing to see so many empty seats here in Hall E of the International Expo Centre. Even with two bronze medals in the bag I can count less than 40 people in the stand opposite me. Slightly more populated section to my right but still probably less than 100 people here to watch these first fencing finals."
- Paul Osborne on poor attendance at the fencing. On the plus side, the Wi/Fi is working well.

History for El Salvador and sporting symbolism for Ukraine

El Salvador flag18:20 And remarkably, if my research is correct, that is El Salvador's first medal at any form of the Olympic Games. Youth, Summer or Winter!

The Central American country has participated at 10 Summer Olympics, with a best performance of fifth for cyclist Maureen Kaila Vergara in the points race at Atlanta 1996. They sent six athletes to Singapore 2010 but didn't manage a top 10 finish.

What a performance that is by Acosta!

When I think of El Salvador and sport, I think of the "Soccer War" fought with Honduras in 1969, a brief war which originated following rioting in the aftermath of a qualifying match for 1970 FIFA World Cup.

Ukrainian flag
18:15 Some reaction to that gold medal for Ukraine a few moments ago now. A wonderful moment once again for a country ravaged by conflict in recent months. We saw it at the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Sochi and now we do again. The power of sport to give hope at times of trouble.

Romanchuk won a bronze medal in the same event at the European Junior Championships last month in Dordrecht, The Netherlands. Tonight's bronze medallist Henrik Christiansen of Norway took silver there, but the winner of that occasion, Wojciech Wojdak of Poland, only placed sixth tonight.

Medal frenzy at the Expo Centre...

Paul Osborne"I've just arrived at the International Expo Centre ready for an action packed evening of medals, medals and just a few more medals. First stop it's Hall E where we have the women's individual foil finals and men's individual sabre finals. My entrance was greeted by some frightening screams by China's Ali Huang, as she collected bronze in the women's event. I thought at first that they may be sceams of joy but by the look on her face, the youngster was not best pleased with her bronze... Kesha's 'Crazy Kids' played her off the stage in a fitting tribute to my first five minutes of sporting action here in Nanjing. It's time for the men's sabre bronze medal final now before the two finals get underway. America's Sabrina Massialas and Japan's Karin Miyawaki gun for gold in the women's contest while South Korea's Dongju Kim goes head to head with Russia's Ivan Ilin the men's. Disappointingly there is no sign of acertain IOC President at the moment.  He was 'Olympic champion in men's foil at Montreal 1976' if you didn't know
- A welcome return to the insidethegames "music-at-sporting-events" obsession as Paul Osborne checks in at the fencing.

Gold for Ukraine in first swimming final of Nanjing 2014

Nanjing 2014 gold medal
18:07 Mykhailo Romanchuk of Ukraine wins the gold medal in the 400m freestyle. A brilliant finish sees him win by 1.56 seconds in 3:49.76 over Marcelo Alberto Acosta of El Salvador.

Henrik Christiansen of Norway snatches bronze as the early leader Akram Ahmed fades to an agonising fourth place.

18:05 Sure enough, he is overhauled by Marcelo Alberto Acosta of El Salvador with 100m to go. But Mykhailo Romanchuk of Ukraine is also there...

18:03 Akram Ahmed of Egypt is our leader at the halfway point in the 400m freestyle. he is looking fairly tired though and the rest of field is queuing up behind him.

17:58 We are moments away from the first swimming final of Nanjing 2014, in the men's 400m freestyle. The men's under 56kg weightlifting competition is also beginning. That one will take a little longer to unfold.

17:52 Four of the world's most powerful nations participated in the semi-finals of the women's foil fencing a few minutes ago. Karin Miyawaki of Japan overcame Marta Martyanova of Russia before Sabrina Massialas of the US beat Ali Huang of China. Gold and bronze medal matches will follow shortly.

Hockey 5s: another innovative sport at Nanjing 2014

17:46 Fittingly, China won the opening match, 8-0 against Zambia in the women's competition. Argentina then dispatched Fiji 22-0.

The first men's match is taking place as I type, with Spain currently 5-0 up against Bangladesh.

17:41 Hockey is another sport that is innovating at Nanjing 2014. Here is the FIH's take on the new hockey5s format.

Quote marks"The hockey competition was a massive success at Singapore 2010, introducing the world to a number of extraordinarily gifted individuals who would go on to achieve exceptional things over the next four years.

Two such players were members of Australia's Youth Olympic Gold medal winning 'class of 2010': Jeremy Hayward and Daniel Beale. This year, Hayward played a starring role as the mighty Kookaburras triumphed at Rabobank Hockey World Cup, being named Hero Best Young Player of the tournament in the process, while Beale featured in the squad that stormed to gold at the recent Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.  The event in Singapore also gave us a first look at Frederique Derkx and Marloes Keetels, two young women who showcased their huge potential by winning gold with The Netherlands at the 2010 Youth Olympic Games before going on to fulfill their promise by becoming world champions in The Hague earlier this year.

A significant change from the Singapore 2010 event is that the tournament in Nanjing moves away from 11-a-side to hockey5s, the eye catching, action-packed format played between teams of only five on-field players. With shorter games and a smaller pitch, Hockey5s adds a new flavour to our classic sport, with rules specifically tailored to encourage skills and trickery, generating intense and highly entertaining play. It is certain to attract plenty of attention in Nanjing, and provides the perfect platform for showcasing the future stars of the sport.

As previously announced by FIH, there will be ten teams in both the men's and women's competitions, with a total of 180 promising young hockey players representing 16 countries. Each competition has two representatives from Europe, Asia, Africa, Pan America and Oceania in a truly global tournament.

The tournament will take place at the Youth Olympic Sports Park Hockey Centre, a cracking new facility that was constructed especially for the Nanjing Games."

China just miss out on second win of the day in rugby sevens

China against Australia in rugby sevens action ©Getty Images

17:26 Rugby sevens has been back underway in the last hour or so over at the Sports Park Rugby Field. After their brilliant win over Canada earlier, China's girls could not continue their winning streak, but they gave it a jolly good go, losing 15-12 to hot medal contenders Australia in the end.

Wins for Canada over the United States and for Spain over Tunisia in the evening's other two matches so far in the female competition.

17:20 Into the medal matches soon in taekwondo, but a bit of disappointing news first for the only Afghanistan athlete competing here first as Farahnaz Qubi was defeated 19-0 by Panipak Wongpattanakit of Thailand in the quarter-finals of the under 46kg competition earlier.

The Thai player will next face Chen Zih-Ting of Taiwan in the first semi-final at 19:00.

17:08 Speaking of President Bach, here he is in yet another selfie, this time with the first gold medal winner of Nanjing 2014, Australian triathlete Brittany Dutton.

Twitter logoNice cameo, @Stephanie_Jenks! MT @AUSOlympicTeam: @brittadutton is a real contender for #YOGSelfie of the Games!
- Oh dear. The USOC are already claiming we have a "selfie of the Games". Though saying that, the outstanding "photobomb-selfie" of Glasgow 2014 also happened on Day One. And that was also taken by an Australian, hockey player Jayde Taylor on that occasion, along with a certain Queen Elizabeth II...

The best selfie of Nanjing 2014 so far? ©Twitter

16:55 We have about until we get a glut of medals action here in Nanjing - in fencing, judo, weightlifting, swimming and taekwondo. Paul Osborne has left for the International Expo Centre where three of those sports are taking place.

As well as a chance to bring you some live fencing, weightlifting and taekwondo coverage, it will also provide an opportunity to test the venue Wi/Fi systems here. Problems have been reported at some competition venues, with IOC President Thomas Bach insisting yesterday that they were working with the Organising Committee to rectify these soon.

First gold for China

Twitter logoThe 1st golden medal of #Nanjing2013 has come out in Women's 48kg #weightlifting! Congrats to #China's Jiang Huihua!
- It looks like Nanjing 2014 remember Huihua's achievements from last year.

Nanjing 2014 gold medal16:43 Jiang Huihua has won China's first gold medal of Nanjing 2014 with victory in the women's 48kg weightlifting competition.

The 16-year-old lifted 88kg in the snatch before adding 105kg in the clean & jerk to seal the win on a total of 193kg.

Her closest competitor was North Korea's Songgum Ri who finished with a total of 165kg for silver.

Latvia's Rebeka Koha took bronze with 165kg, however, missed out on silver due to a higher body weight than the North Korean.

16:40 A quick update on the boys and girls beach volleyball competitions following the withdrawal of teams from Sierra Leone and Nigerian as a consequence of the Ebola outbreak in West Africa. Rather than redraw the groups, the FIVB decided that all matches involving the players would still count, but would be automatically forfeited due to the players absence.

"According to the recent IOC communications, it is confirmed that both the men and women teams from Nigeria and Sierra Leone will not play any matches in the beach volleyball Tournaments of the Nanjing 2014 Youth Olympic Games due to 'force majeure'," said FIVB beach volleyball delegate Marco "Tullio" Teixeira.

"All their matches will be treated as forfeits according to FIVB Specific Competition Regulation."

"Since we did not know the official status of the Nigeria and Sierra Leone players at the time of our technical meeting, we completed the drawing of groups as scheduled.

"It is unfortunate that the athletes from those two countries cannot compete and we all wish them well."

This means the Nigerian teams of Phillip Akande/Samuel Morris, and Hajara Audu/Bitrus Jummai, and the Sierra Leone pairings of Abubakarr Kamara/Patrick Lombi, and Kadiatu Conteh/Aminata Turay will all be forfeited. Teams from Turkey and Switzerland duly received byes this morning.

With nine days of beach volleyball competition, the five days of pool play matches for both male and female participants ends on Friday (August 22). The top four teams from each group advance to the single-elimination bracket rounds starting two days later at the 2,000-seat venue at the Nanjing Sports Park Complex.

Ruggiero's words of wisdom

Ruggiero Angela meets with the US rugby sevens squad ahead of their opening encounter in Nanjing ©Team USA

16:25 United States Olympic ice hockey star and IOC member Angela Ruggiero, who won four Olympic gold medals as part of the US ice hockey team including gold at Nagano 1998, paid a visit to the US rugby sevens squad during its jersey ceremony yesterday.

The vice-chair of the IOC Athletes' Commission gave the team a number of words of wisdom ahead of their opening fixture with Spain this morning.

1. "Approach every game like there's a scout in the stands and you're trying to make the Olympic Team." This piece of advice came from Ruggiero's father and it struck a chord with some of the rugby athletes the most.

2. "Have you ever played bubble hockey? I love this imagery of having something that shields you from the rest of the world. In bubble hockey, it's the bubble — you can kind of see the crowd, you can see what's going on, you can hear the crowd but it's muffled. You know things are going on around you, but what are you focused on? The game — right now, the present moment. Don't play for Rio in two years; don't play for tomorrow. Play for today."

3. "Rugby sevens is 14 minutes, it's a short game. Every moment is going to count for you guys. Everything that you do and everything your teammates do is going to affect one another. Be as focused as you can and do whatever head games you need to do to be focused."

4. "At the most elite level, the biggest difference isn't the body — it's the mind. It's who can use their body by utilising what's going on upstairs."

5. "Play as a team. You can't do it alone; rely on your team mates. Talk to each other out on the field, recognise what's going on. You're going to need each other for different reasons. Draw strength from that. If you get through the next few days and you rely on each other and you're successful, you guys will know each other for the rest of your lives because you'll have shared such a special moment and such a unique experience that you'll never forget. So make sure you believe in yourselves first."

6. "Having women's hockey in the Olympics changed everything for our sport. That's something you have to consider. You're pioneers. You're setting the stage for future. It's a really cool thing to know you're an ambassador. Back home, they'll know about rugby even before Rio because of you. You're an inspiration. I know you don't want the pressure, but you should never forget you're an ambassador.

Huihua on course for first Chinese medal

16:10 The snatch contest has now concluded in the women's 48kg weightlifting and, unsurprisingly, it's China's Jiang Huihua who leads after a lift of 88kg.

Huihua's victory in last year's Asian Youth Games was the first gold medal of the Championships, with the youngster on course to collect the host's first medal of any colour here at the Youth Olympic Games.

She was actually handed her gold at the Asian Youth Games by none other than Sheikh Ahmad al-Fahad Al-Sabah, head of the Olympic Council of Asia as well as the Association of National Olympic Committees.

In fact, insidethegames published a report on her victory here last year. Read it here.

Rugby sevens reaction

Quote marks"Old meets new here with Jacques Rogge watching rugby sevens' Youth Olympic debut! China have beaten Canada in a big upset in the women's tournament! Good crowd too!"
- IRB director of communications Dominic Rumbles updates insidethegames on the rugby sevens action earlier on. The second round of matches are just about to begin.

More on Persson/Liqin

A bit of a history lesson on Jörgen Persson and Wang Liqin after that delightful #YOGselfie from earlier.

Persson is arguably one of the last players to challenge the Chinese dominance of table tennis in recent years. The Swede has represented Sweden in every Olympic Games since the sport was introduced into the Olympic programme back in 1988. He has collected nine European and five world title in his time, dating back to the 1986 European Championships in Prague.

Liqin is a double Olympic champion having taken gold in the team event at Beijing 2008 and the doubles event at Sydney 2000. He has collected 11 World Championship gold medals, including three in the singles, and was number one in the ITTF world rankings for 25 consecutive months from September 2000 to September 2002.

The pair met at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games with Liqin coming out on top of a gruelling bronze medal match.

Look above for a glimpse of the duo's encounter.

15:40 It appears one of the official Nanjinglele mascot's had some technical difficulties during last night's Opening Ceremony.

Maybe there was a pebble stuck in the wheel...

Breaking: Samsung Electronics has extended its deal to be a worldwide TOP sponsor of the International Olympic Committee until the end of 2020.

15:30 They are the 11th company to do so in a major boost for the IOC as it continues to build its financial security into the future.

The extension of the partnership was made official during a Signing Ceremony on the sidelines of the Games here between IOC President Thomas Bach, and Samsung Electronics vice-chairman Jay Y Lee.

"We are delighted to be able to continue our partnership with Samsung," said Bach.

"The funding generated by the TOP Programme directly supports the staging of every Olympic Games, as well as every one of the National Olympic Committees, enabling athletes from all over the world to prepare for and compete at each Games.

"Samsung also supports the operations of each Games by providing leading wireless telecommunications and technology equipment.

"In addition, Samsung's technologies and global marketing reach will engage fans around the world with the Olympic values and the Olympic Movement

15:15 We've got more medal action underway here in Nanjing now as the women's 48kg weightlifters take centre stage at the International Expo Centre.

The event sees 12 girls in action with China's Jiang Huihua looking like an early medal favourite.

The 16-year-old took gold at the Asian Youth Games here in Nanjing last year and has entered at the heaviest weight in both the snatch and clean & jerk.

Judo action is up and running here in Nanjing ©Twitter

15:01 We've had our first taste of judo action here in Nanjing as preliminary rounds of the men's under 55kg ad 66kg events take to the Longjiang Gymnasium alongside the women's under 44kg.

Judo proved a huge success at last month's Commonwealth Games, mainly due to the complete domination by Home Nation athletes, it must be said.

I wouldn't expect to see the same sort of results here in Nanjing, however, with just Peter Miller bearing the Team GB mantle in today's events.

The 18-year-old has just recovered from an elbow injury and to make matters worse, he was forced to move up to the under 66kg weight category with his preferred weight not disputed at the Youth Olympic Games

14:45 Good news for China back in the Wutaishan Gymnasium where Guipu Lin has just beaten Chinese Taipei's Chia-Hung Lu in the men's badminton singles.

14:30 Qualification is underway in the men's artistic gymnastics here at the Nanjing Olympic Sports Centre. Today's competition sees all gymnasts compete on each of the apparatus, six for men and four for women. Their overall results will determine whether they make the all-around finals on Tuesday (August 19) while results on each piece of apparatus will determine whether they qualify for the final for that specific piece of equipment.

Armenia's Vigen Khachatryan leads the all-around competition as it stands with two of the six events having taken place.

14:20 Moving to the Sport Institute Gymnasium and table tennis legends Jörgen Persson of Sweden and China's Wang Liqin appear to be enjoying themselves here in Nanjing.

14:10 Tasty encounter in the men's badminton singles currently running at the Wutaishan Gymnasium where China's Guipu Lin is taking on Chinese Taipei's Chia-Hung Lu. It's all square at 1-1 at the moment.

13:55 The two newest Olympic sports, rugby sevens and golf, are both taking place here for the first time as well. Every team has now played their first match in the boys and girls rugby competition, with another round of matches to come later.

Golf action begins on Tuesday (August 19), though my colleague Paul Osborne very nearly made the lengthy journey to the Zhongshan International Golf Club this morning after we got a little confused about when it began...

13:52 Lest we forget, there are also four exhibition sports taking place throughout the Games: in skateboarding, wushu, roller-skating and climbing. The insidethegames team will be out and about sampling them over coming days...

13:48 We spoke a few moments ago about the innovative cycling programme here in Nanjing. With the whole Olympic programme up for reconsideration as part of the Agenda 2020 reform process, many sports are using these Games to showcase new events.

Triathlon is one of them, with the ITU striving to have a mixed team relay included at the Olympics at some point in the future. The relay will conclude the programme on Thursday (August 11) after the men's race tomorrow morning.

13:44 A reminder that Australian triathlete Brittany Dutton won the first gold medal of Nanjing 2014 earlier on today. ITU President, and IOC member, Marisol Casado was on hand to present her with her medal.

13:36 Day one action has concluded now in rowing, where competitors from Belarus, Cuba, Canada and Turkey were the quickest in the four events in which there were heats today: the boy's and girl's single sculls and the boy's and girl's coxless pair events respectively.

While action is over for the day in cycling as well as rowing, it is about to begin in other sports such as hockey, gymnastics and weightlifting - where the next medal will be won this afternoon.

13:28 A win for Hugo Calderano in that spicy South American table tennis clash we mentioned earlier. It was close, but he overcame lower-ranked Argentinian opponent Fermin Tenti 10-12, 12-10, 14-12, 11-6 in his Group B opener.

13:23 Into the quarter-finals in the girl's foil fencing now. Two matches have already been completed, with Karin Miyawaki of Japan and Sabrina Massialas of the US already into the last four. Medals will be decided this evening.

Cycling at Nanjing 2014

13:17 Czech Republic are doing well in both the male and female events so far. It's a particularly innovative cycling competition here in Nanjing, with only three gold medals being distributed: team boys, team girls and a mixed team event.

Both the boys and girls events have two athletes per nation. Each of the athletes must compete in two of the four races on offer here in Nanjing - BMX, road time trial, Olympic-style cross country race, and the elimination event showcased today. Every competitor will then compete in the road race with the results of all races totalled to determine the winner.

The mixed team event follows the same format, however, two boys and two girls compete for each team.

13:10 UCI President Brian Cookson has been enjoying the mountain biking elimination action that has been going on today at the Laoshan Cycling Course.

Brian Cookson is at the mountain biking eliminator ©Twitter13:04 The cross-country elimination race is a new mountain bike race format in which four riders compete against each other in each heat, in a style that bears some similarity with BMX, ski and snowboard-cross events that have lit up the Olympic Games in recent times. The two fastest riders get to the next round while the two slower riders are eliminated from the race.

The format differs from the classic cross-country race both in its sprint character and the separation of the race into heats. The 500m to 1,000m short track itself is similar to cross country tracks, going both uphill and downhill.

Twitter logoFantastic opening ceremony in @nanjing2014yog. Real celebration of youth, sport and humanity. Thanks to organisers and participants. But being in @nanjing2014yog part of me is still with Team Ukraine at @Euro_Champs. Congrats for Anna Titimets and for Olha Saladuha!!
- IOC Executive Board member Sergey Bubka is also here, although a part of him is also in Zurich it would seem...

12:58 As we did in Sochi 2014, we will be keeping you abreast of all the goings on of the many IOC members and International Federations chiefs here in Nanjing. We already mentioned that Gerardo Werthein was at the rugby sevens, and here he is taking on board IOC President Thomas Bach's message about taking selfies...

12:47 The clear favourite for the men's singles table tennis gold, which will become something of a showpiece event here in Nanjing I feel, is Fan Zhendong of China, the third-ranked senior in the world who read the Athletes' Oath at the Opening Ceremony last night.

With the exception of Lithuania's London 2012 Olympian champion swimmer Ruta Meilutyte, Fan is probably the most successful athlete competing at these Games.

He lost the first set of his opener earlier on though against Brian Afanador of Puerto Rico, but swiftly hit back to win 9-11, 11-5, 11-2, 11-6.

12:40 Speaking of Argentina. There is a humdinger of a South American clash about to begin in the boys singles table tennis. It is Fermin Tenti of Argentina versus Hugo Calderano of Brazil.

We spoke about the Japanese and Chinese rivalry earlier. Argentina versus Brazil is just as intense, as anyone who watched the FIFA World Cup earlier this summer will know. Calderano is ranked 190th in the senior world rankings, and sixth in South America so is the clear favourite, but can Argentina's good start to Nanjing 2018 continue?

Kenyan flag12:28 A great win for Kenya in the rugby sevens, the African representative in the men's competition. They beat the United States 22-12. Argentina are ahead against France in the next match.

Argentinian capital city Buenos Aires will be the location for the next edition of the Summer Youth Olympic Games in 2018.

12:15 Speaking of the Asian Youth Games, I feel the need to shamelessly plug a Big Read I wrote last year assessing preparations for the Youth Olympics: The week in which Nanjing showed it is perfectly poised for 2014.

One of the major talking points then was the transport system, which was experiencing a few teething problems. Everything is working smoothly so far here, although we have decided that travelling on the Subway from our Hotel is easier and quicker than the Media Shuttle Bus.

It is very easy to navigate even for someone whose Chinese extends to an overly enthusiastic "Ni Hao" to just about everyone he passes.

On the subway, you get to see signs like this as well... I have never seen spitting officially outlawed before...

12:02
Unlike during the Opening Ceremony last night, where there was torrential rain throughout, it is dry this morning, which will certainly help the rugby sevens players currently competing. But it is still so much cooler than it was this time last year during the Asian Youth Games.

11:51 So a bit of a lull in terms of medals until the women's under 48kg weightlifting begins this afternoon at 14:30. Plenty more sport going on in the meantime, however...

11:39 Men and women's singles action has been going on all morning in badminton. No Chinese players have taken to the court yet but there were big cheers a few moments ago when Tsz Yau Ng of Hong Kong played her first match. She won as well, 2-0 over Luise Heim of Germany.

Nowak wins gold for Poland in pistol shooting

Nanjing 2014 gold medal11:30 Agata Nowak of Poland has won the 10m air pistol shooting. A complete change from the qualification standings as her total of 196.9 edges Margarita Lomova of Russia by 2.5 points. Minjung Kim of South Korea takes bronze.

Xiu Yi Teh of Singapore, who led after qualification, cannot maintain her form and finishes down in seventh.

London 2012 Olympic champion in action in the pool

11:23 Ruta Meilutyte was apparently very comfortable in that heat. Her world record is 29.48, so getting on for three seconds quicker than she swam this morning. She forgo the FINA European Championship to be here this week, so her presence is a huge boost for the Youth Olympics.

11:16 The 50m breaststroke final will be tomorrow night, but there are three finals this evening: the men's 400m Freestyle, women's 200m individual medley and the mixed 4x100m freestyle relay.

11:08 Lots of action already in the pool this morning. with heats in the men's 400m freestyle, the women's 50m breaststroke, and the men and women's 100m backstroke.

Competing in heat five of the breaststroke was Ruta Meilutyte of Lithuania, the 100m London 2012 Olympic champion who is surely the biggest name here in Nanjing across any sport. The 17-year-old won her heat in 32.11 seconds, but remarkably, she wasn't the quickest athlete of the day. That honour went to Anna Sztankovics of Hungary in heat two.

The Hungarian won 100m gold medals at the 2011 and 2012 European Junior Championships. In comparison, Meilutyte won gold and silver at the 2013 FINA World Championships and is the world record holder over 50 and 100 metres. She is also a swimming scholar at Plymouth College in England, the same school that diver Tom Daley - the Olympic bronze medallist and 2009 world champion who finished a disappointing ninth at the Youth Olympics in Singapore in 2010 - attended.

Fiji gunning for rugby sevens glory

Quote marks"The boys are happy and the attitude is right. Everyone is looking forward to getting across to China and settling down after what all has happened. We have to get on with the task on hand.

The good thing about that the boys jelled together. We are going there to win gold. This is the first time that rugby sevens will be played at the Olympics. It is the buildup to the Rio Olympics, so we want to be the first team to win the gold medal."
- Team manager Ropate Kauvesi on Fiji's preparations for the rugby sevens competition. They started well, with a 29-5 victory over Japan.

10:49 The next medal to be won will come in shooting with the women's 10m air pistol competition over at the Fangshan Shooting Hall. The final begins at 11:00 but it's been a busy morning as the qualification round has already finished.

Xiu Yi Teh of Singapore led the preliminary standings with a score of 382. Anna Korakaki of Greece lies second with Afaf Elhodhod of Egypt third. If those three end up on the podium that will mean the first two events have produced medallists from five different continents. A truly global Games!

10:40 Action has begun in the women's single sculls rowing, and we have had a draw in the third rugby sevens match of the day - that doesn't happen very often - it was 12-12 between Spain and the US in the women's event.

The first men's match has begun and Fiji are romping home against Japan. They lead 24-0 at the moment. Fiji, remember, could not compete in the rugby sevens at the Commonwealth Games because they were only reinstated in the Games after the draw was made. It is great to see them here!

There are only six teams in the men and women's competition here, and there are some big names from the global rugby community who are missing. No New Zealand, Great Britain, Samoa or South Africa, for example, in either event.

10:32 A round-up of what is going on elsewhere now, around the grounds so to speak, on day one in Nanjing. There have already been wins for pairs from Kazakhstan, Ukraine, Switzerland, Turkey, Finland, Uruguay, Canada and Latvia in men and women's preliminary action in beach volleyball.

Australian triathlete Dutton wins first gold medal of Nanjing 2014!

10:27 They do not have an official medals table at the Youth Olympics, because it is not a contest between countries. But what the heck, we are having one at insidethegames, and Australia are sitting proud and pretty in first place at the moment. Have a look here.

10:22 Dutton, a 16-year-old from Brisbane, is a three-time Australian champion who won the Oceanian Qualifier for Nanjing. But she was forced to withdraw from last year's Australian Youth Olympic Games triathlon team due to a stress fracture in her back.

So some great fighting qualities to overcome that adversity and win today, one of the hallmark of the Youth Olympic spirit we have heard so much about already in Nanjing.

Nanjing 2014 gold medal10:10 Brittany Dutton crosses the line to win the women's triathlon, the first gold medal of Nanjing 2014! Stephanie Jenks of the US wins silver and Emilie Morier of France claims bronze.

Dutton stopped the clock at 59:56 for the win, with Jenks 37 seconds behind and Morier a further 22 seconds in arrears. Kristin Ranwig of Germany was fourth with Minami Kubono of Japan fifth.

10:06
Dutton is heading for the finish line and she is looking like she will win gold for Australia. The Oceania country has long dominated this sport, although their stranglehold, in the senior ranks at least, has been taken away from them by Great Britain in recent years.

10:01 Are Australia going to win the first gold medal of Nanjing 2014? Brittany Dutton has broken clear in the running section of the women's triathlon...

Stephanie Jenks of the United States is chasing hard. Youngsters from New Zealand and France are also still in contention for medals.

09:55 It was a comfortable 31-0 victory for Australia over Tunisia in that opening rugby sevens encounter at the Nanjing Olympic Sports Park Rugby Field. But we have since seen a first Chinese success of the Games. A great win for the host nation, 24-10 over Canada!

Chinese flagWhen you consider Canada have just finished runners-up in the senior women's World Cup, that is a major result for China!
