Russian Denis Tarasov set a world record on his way to picking up a European title in Eindhoven today ©AFP/Getty ImagesRussia's Denis Tarasov broke the men's 100 metres freestyle S8 world record on his way to victory, while Olivier van der Voort and Summer Mortimer secured two more gold medals for The Netherlands on the penultimate day of action at the International Paralympic Committee Swimming European Championships in Eindhoven.

Tarasov led from the front in a dominant display to touch home in a time of 56.27sec to finish almost two seconds clear of compatriot Konstatin Lisenkov and Josef Craig of Great Britain.

That was one of five gold medals for the Russians on day six of the Championships in the Pieter van den Hoogenband Stadium.

Anastasia Diodorova triumphed in the women's 100m backstroke S6 to win her first gold of the week ahead of Spain's Julia Castello and Ukrainian Oksana Kruhl, while Darya Stukalova took gold in the women's 100m freestyle S12 and Anna Krivshina was crowned European champion in the women's 100m freestyle S13.

The Russians fifth gold of the day came in the men's 4x100m freestyle relay 34 points to keep them second on the overall medals table behind neighbours Ukraine.

The Ukrainians enjoyed another successful day picking five more top spots.

Dmytro Vynohradets once again led the way as he bagged his seventh European title of the week.

The 13-time world champion dominated the men's 150m individual medley SM3, finishing ahead of team mate Andrii Derevinskyi and Greek Ioannis Kostaki.

Iaraslav Semenenko and Olesandr Mashchenko cranked the Ukrainian gold medal machine into gear in the morning session with wins in the men's 100m backstroke S6 and 100m freestyle S11 respectively.

Yevheniy Bohodayko picked up his third gold in Eindhoven as he bested team mate Andriy Kozlenko and Italy's Valerio Taras in the men's 50m butterfly S5, while Maksym Veraksa secured his second European title with victory in the 100m freestyle S12.

Britain's Stephanie Millward and Stephanie Slater can rightly lay claim to the accolade of athlete of the day as both picked up two gold medals apiece.

Millward claimed the women's 100m backstroke S9 title while Slater secured the win in the 100m freestyle S8.

Both swimmers then helped Britain to take gold in the women's 4x100m freestyle relay 34 points event.

There was further British success for double Paralympic champion James Crisp, who triumphed in the men's 100m backstroke S9 race, beating Hungary's Tamas Toth and 16-year-old Polish swimmer Patryk Biskup.

Meanwhile, the irrepressible Teresa Perales was one of two Spanish winners today.

The 38-year-old six-time Paralympic champion won her third European crown in Eindhoven by taking victory in the women's 50m freestyle S5, while compatriot Sebastian Rodriguez was the champion in the men's 50m freestyle S5.

The Dutch also celebrated two gold medals as van der Voort and Mortimer inevitably raised the loudest cheers inside the arena.

Van der Voort touched home first in the men's 100m backstroke S10, while Mortimer secured the women's 100m backstroke S10 crown setting a European record of 1min :06.46sec in the process.

In the women's 100m freestyle S11, Italy's Cecilia Camellini finished more than three seconds ahead of Germany's four-time world champion Daniela Schulte with bronze going to Sweden's Maija Reichard.

Denmark and Belarus secured their second gold medals of the Championship as Ihar Boki took the win in the men's 100m freestyle S13, with Jonas Larsen winning the men's 150m individual medley SM4.
