Great Britain has secured its third triathlon mixed relay world title ©ITUGreat Britain has become the most successful nation in triathlon mixed relay history after claiming its third world title in Hamburg today.

Including the World Championship gold medals from 2011 and 2012, the country has now collected half of the world titles on offer in the discipline to date, after the sixth edition of the competition in the German city.

Lucy Hall got the team off to a solid start, then Jonathan Brownlee's outstanding second leg performance saw him pull himself back up to the leaders on the bike, before a surge on the run to put Vicky Holland into the lead.

Finally, Alistair Brownlee outran France's Vincent Luis in the final leg to seal the victory for Britain in 1 hour 19min 07sec as he had done in the men's race the previous day to claim his 16th career World Triathlon Series win.

"It was a great team performance, but Jonny to be honest had the stand-out leg today, that was absolutely phenomenal to get back that deficit, but everybody did great and we are really happy to win it again after last year," Alistair Brownlee said.

Jonathan Brownlee added: "I did a bit of time trialling at the start of the year and I needed it.

"I love this format of racing; it's great to take part in, great race."

The French team of Audrey Merle and Cassandre Beaugrand - the silver and bronze European Championships medallists, last year's junior men's world champion Dorian Coninx and Luis - won the silver medal in 1:19.11, while the Hungarian squad of Zsófia Kovács, Tamás Tóth, Margit Vanek and Ákos Vanek claimed bronze - their first Mixed Relay World Championship medal - in 1:19:31.

Britain's top triathletes are now preparing to compete in the triathlon mixed relay at Glasgow 2014, where the discipline will make its Commonwealth Games debut on July 26.
