The English put 35 goals past Wales on their first tournament outing and, while the scoring rate dropped significantly against the South Africans, they still managed to find the target nine times to make it two wins from two.

Angie Winstanley-Smith was the scorer-in-chief for England while at the other end Jade Smith kept a clean sheet right up until the fourth quarter before she was eventually beaten from the penalty spot.

That was the sole women's action on day three and was followed by yet another masterclass from the Maltese men, who registered their third win on the trot to top the table.

The competition's top-scorer Matthew Zammit was the main man again, bagging four of the goals as his side romped to an 18-8 win over Singapore, who opened their Championship account with a draw against Wales yesterday.

England also maintained their 100 per cent start in Aberdeen as they recorded their second win against New Zealand.

Despite Adam Pye and Matt Lewis giving the Kiwis a 2-0 lead early on, Tom Curwen and Jake Vincent levelled the game by the end of the first quarter.

England lost keeper Ed Scott to an injury, which saw Matt Holland coming into the action, and he was immediately involved in pulling off two penalty saves which inspired his team to go on and rattle in five goals in the second and third quarters to help them on their way to victory.

The Scots took on South Africa in the final game of the day in front of a noisy home crowd.

But, despite the vociferous home support, the hosts never managed to get their noses in front during the contest, trailing 3-2 and 4-3 after the opening two quarters.

The third period followed a similar pattern, with the South Africans just doing enough to stay ahead 7-5 before goals from Chris Baker and Nic Mollyneux extended the lead early of the visitors in the final quarter.

Although Scotland rallied with three late goals, it was not enough as they went down by the minimum margin, losing 9-8.

The 2014 Commonwealth Water Polo Championships are due to take place until Saturday (April 12).

The final two days of the competition will be streamed live on the Scottish Swimming website.
