February 13 - Aberdeen will play host to the top water polo players in the Commonwealth during April ©Scottish SwimmingAberdeen Aquatics Centre has been announced as the host venue for this year's Commonwealth Water Polo Championships, it has been announced. 

This will be third staging of the event following Manchester in 2002 and Perth in 2006.

"This will be a tremendous boost for the sport in Scotland, showcasing some of the world's best players," said chairman of Scottish Water Polo Ken Fussell.

"There has been great effort from all stakeholders to stage these Championships.

"I am looking forward to an exciting event, which will be another milestone to establish the sport in the Commonwealth Games programme in the future."

The Championships, due to take place from April 5 to 12 at Scotland's newest international aquatics facility, will represent the first major international event to be held at the Aquatics Centre situated within the Aberdeen Sports Village complex.

The centre has seating for 600 spectators and contains a 50 metre and 25m pool along with full diving facilities including springboards and platforms up to 10m.

David Beattie, chief executive of Aberdeen Sports Village, hopes hosting the competition will give a boost to the facility and particularly the sport of water polo in Aberdeen.

"Aberdeen Sports Village is delighted to host the Commonwealth Water Polo Championships at the new Aquatics Centre," said Beattie.

"We have worked closely with all our partners during each phase of the building process and securing high calibre competitions such as these go to highlight the capabilities of the centre.

"We are confident that the centre will prove to be a popular facility for the people of the north east and we look forward to attracting many more international competitions."

In the men's competition, hosts Scotland will be joined by England, Wales, South Africa, Singapore, New Zealand and Malta.

The women's competition will see Scotland, Canada, England, Wales, South Africa and Singapore taking part.

The Championships are being supported by Aberdeen Sports Village, Aberdeen City Council, Homecoming Scotland, Scottish Swimming, British Swimming and Commonwealth Games Scotland.

"The Commonwealth Water Polo Championships is an exciting addition to the 2014 events calendar and will extend the benefits of the Commonwealth Games and Ryder Cup in this momentous year for Scotland," said Minister for Sport and Commonwealth Games Shona Robison.

"It is only fitting that a water polo championship returns to the land of its origins in what is our Homecoming Year and as well as celebrating Scotland's sporting heritage, these championships will create a world stage for home-grown athletes and showcase a new state of the art centre for swimming.

"The Aquatics Centre at Aberdeen Sports Village is a fantastic facility and will provide an inspiring arena for athletes and spectators alike."

The preliminaries will be free of charge, while tickets for the finals on Saturday April 12 will be available in advance online or on the day.
