The opening competition for male judoka has tended to be held in the Georgian city of Tbilisi, however, due to the introduction of the 2014 Tbilisi Judo Grand Prix, this is no longer the case, giving Sofia the opportunity to host the opening European Open for both men and women.

World junior champion Sappho Coban will be amongst a highly competitive women's under-52 kilogram category with the German looking likely to be among the medals in Sofia.

She will face tough opposition in the form of compatriot and double European medallist Romy Tarangul and Italy's world junior silver medallist Odette Giuffrida, as the trio look to begin their 2014 campaign in the best possible fashion.

Slovenia's European Championship bronze medallist Tina Trstenjak, who was last year's most successful judoka at European Cup level, will be hoping to build on a successful 2013 with a medal in the women's under 63kg category.

She will be up against Slovenia's former European under-23's champion Nina Milosevic and newly crowned German champion Claudia Ahrens.

The men's under 60kg weight category should see a close encounter between Switzerland's European Championship runner-up Ludovic Chammartin and Israel's Artiom Arshansky, whilst Golan Pollack will be favourite to capture the men's under-66kg title.
