Swiss Federer, who took five sets to beat Tsonga when they met in Melbourne last year, dispatched the Frenchman 6-3, 7-5, 6-4.

He will now play three-time Australian Open finalist Andy Murray, who beat Stephane Robert of France 6-1, 6-2, 6-7, 6-2.

Federer and Murrary met at the semi-final stage last year, with the Briton winning out in five sets.

The upset of the day came in the women's draw, where Russian number three seed Maria Sharapova lost her fourth round match 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 to Slovakian Dominika Cibulkova.

Sharapova had left the court before the final set for a medical timeout.

Belarusian Victoria Azarenka, who has won the last two Australian Opens, made light work of American Sloane Stephens, winning 6-3, 6-2.

Men's number one seed Rafael Nadal was made to work a little harder to defeat Kei Nishikori of Japan 7-6, 7-5, 7-6.

He will now face Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov.

The top pick of tomorrow's matches looks to be the clash between Serbian and defending champion Novak Djokovic, and Swiss Stanislas Wawrinka.

Spain's David Ferrer and Czech Republic's Tomas Berdych will play their quarter-final on Rod Laver Arena.
